Chewy is looking for a

Backend

Software Engineer II

to join our Pet Health engineering organization and help build the future of the Chewy and SmartPak experience.

In this role, you will work alongside a team of engineers from both Chewy and SmartPak on a significant integration and modernization roadmap focused on integrating fulfillment and shipping capabilities, and developing new features across the combined platforms.

About You

You are a hands-on software engineer who enjoys solving complex backend problems and building scalable applications and services. You will primarily develop within Chewy's

Java and AWS-based technology stack

, while partnering with engineers working within SmartPak's .NET environment.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy scalable backend applications and services using Java and modern cloud technologies

  • Build new capabilities supporting the integration of Chewy and SmartPak platforms

  • Develop services and APIs that connect e-commerce, catalog, fulfillment, and customer experiences

  • Partner with engineers across Chewy and SmartPak to understand existing systems and determine long-term integration approaches

  • Contribute to architectural and technical decisions as systems and capabilities are migrated or modernized

  • Write high-quality, maintainable code and participate in code reviews

  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues across distributed systems

  • Apply DevOps and software engineering best practices throughout the development lifecycle

  • Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and business partners to deliver customer-facing capabilities

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent years of experience

  • 4+ years of experience developing backend applications using Java

  • Experience building scalable distributed systems and microservices

  • Experience designing and working with APIs and service-oriented architectures

  • Hands-on experience with cloud-based applications, preferably AWS

  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software design principles

  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices including code reviews, testing, source control, CI/CD, and production operations

  • Ability to work effectively across teams and navigate complex technical integrations

Bonus

  • Experience with Spring Boot or similar Java frameworks

  • Experience with e-commerce, catalog, order management, or fulfillment systems

  • Familiarity with .NET or C#

  • Experience with event-driven architectures, messaging systems, or distributed systems

  • Experience with Kubernetes, Kafka, Terraform, or similar technologies

  • The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.
