Quality Metrology Technician I

Job Summary

The Quality Metrology Technician I is responsible for performing dimensional inspections, basic quality testing, and measurement activities to verify that parts and products meet established engineering, customer, and quality requirements. This position supports the Quality and Production teams through the use and control of gauges, measurement devices, and other quality testing equipment.

The technician will operate and assist with various inspection and testing equipment, including but not limited to CMMs, X-ray equipment, cleanliness testing equipment, spectrometers, and other metrology and quality testing devices, following established procedures and appropriate training.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform dimensional inspections of parts, components, and products according to engineering drawings, specifications, control plans, and work instructions.

• Use and maintain basic precision measuring instruments, including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, pin gauges, and other gauges and measurement devices.

• Assist with the control, organization, identification, and proper storage of gauges and measurement devices.

• Support the company's gauge and measurement device control system, including identifying equipment that is due for calibration or requires maintenance.

• Assist with maintaining calibration records and ensuring inspection equipment is properly labeled and available for use.

• Operate metrology and quality testing equipment, as trained and authorized, including but not limited to:

  • Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs)

  • X-ray equipment

  • Cleanliness testing equipment

  • Spectrometers

  • Other quality testing and measurement devices

• Perform first-piece, in-process, final, and incoming inspections as required.

• Read and interpret basic engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, inspection instructions, and control plans.

• Record and maintain accurate inspection and testing results.

• Identify, document, and report nonconforming parts, materials, or test results to the appropriate Quality or Production personnel.

• Assist with the review and verification of material composition using spectrometer equipment.

• Assist with X-ray inspections and the evaluation of internal part conditions in accordance with established procedures.

• Perform or assist with cleanliness testing as required by customer or internal specifications.

• Assist with CMM inspections and measurements, including loading parts, running established programs, and documenting results.

• Ensure gauges, measurement devices, and testing equipment are handled properly to prevent damage or inaccurate results.

• Maintain clean, organized, and controlled inspection and metrology areas.

• Assist with basic root cause investigations and corrective action activities as assigned.

• Work closely with Production, Engineering, and Quality teams to communicate inspection and testing results.

• Follow all applicable safety, quality, environmental, and equipment operating procedures.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma or GED required.

• Technical education or coursework in manufacturing, machining, quality, metrology, or a related field is preferred.

Experience

• Previous experience in manufacturing, quality, inspection, or metrology is preferred but not required.

• Experience using basic gauges and precision measuring instruments is preferred.

Skills & Abilities

• Basic understanding of measurement, inspection, and quality testing principles.

• Ability to learn and safely operate gauges, measurement devices, and quality testing equipment.

• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and inspection instructions.

• Basic math skills, including decimals and fractions.

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

• Ability to accurately record and communicate inspection and testing results.

• Good organizational and problem-solving skills.

• Basic computer skills.

• Ability to work independently after appropriate training and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a manufacturing environment.

• Experience with CMMs or other advanced metrology equipment.

• Experience with X-ray inspection, cleanliness testing, or spectrometer equipment.

• Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).

• Familiarity with gauge calibration and measurement system control.

• Experience in automotive, die casting, or metalworking manufacturing.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.

• Ability to safely handle parts, gauges, and inspection equipment.

• Ability to lift up to 25–50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Ability to perform detailed visual inspections and measurements.

• Required use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Working Conditions

This position works in a manufacturing and quality inspection environment and may involve exposure to machinery, noise, heat, and other typical manufacturing conditions. The employee may also work with specialized quality testing equipment that requires specific training and adherence to safety procedures. Required PPE must be worn in designated areas.
