Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to manage the financial, cost-accounting and tax-compliance functions of our printing and packaging business. The successful candidate must understand manufacturing operations and be capable of preparing or coordinating local, federal and international tax filings.

The accountant will manage daily accounting, inventory, production costing, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, financial reporting, sales tax, VAT/GST and international transactions. The position will also coordinate with qualified tax professionals in jurisdictions where local certification or representation is required.

Key ResponsibilitiesAccounting and Financial Reporting

  • Maintain accurate general-ledger and subsidiary-account records.

  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing and customer collections.

  • Perform bank, credit-card, merchant-account and intercompany reconciliations.

  • Complete monthly, quarterly and annual financial closing.

  • Prepare profit-and-loss statements, balance sheets, cash-flow statements and management reports.

  • Develop annual budgets, forecasts and cash-flow projections.

  • Maintain fixed-asset schedules and calculate depreciation.

  • Consolidate financial information from domestic and international operations.

  • Manage multi-currency transactions and foreign-exchange adjustments.

  • Coordinate with external auditors, banks, lenders and financial institutions.

Printing and Packaging Cost Accounting

  • Calculate accurate job costs for printing and packaging orders.

  • Track raw materials, including paper, corrugated board, grayboard, ink, coatings, glue, plates, dies and packaging supplies.

  • Monitor raw material, work-in-process and finished-goods inventory.

  • Calculate machine-hour, labor, setup, tooling, finishing, freight and overhead costs.

  • Analyze production waste, spoilage, overruns and material variances.

  • Compare estimated job costs with actual production costs.

  • Assist management in establishing product pricing and profit margins.

  • Track subcontracted services such as lamination, die-cutting, gluing, coating and freight.

  • Prepare profitability reports by customer, product, sales representative and production location.

Tax Compliance

  • Prepare or coordinate federal, state and local income-tax filings.

  • Manage sales-and-use tax registration, calculation and filing in applicable states.

  • Prepare payroll-tax filings, W-2s, 1099s and other required reports.

  • Coordinate business-property, franchise and other local tax filings.

  • Handle VAT/GST, withholding-tax and other indirect-tax requirements for international operations.

  • Maintain documentation for imports, exports, customs duties and international shipments.

  • Assist with transfer-pricing documentation and intercompany transactions.

  • Monitor tax-filing calendars and ensure all payments and returns are submitted on time.

  • Coordinate with country-qualified accountants and tax advisers when local licensing or specialist representation is required.

  • Support tax audits and respond to information requests from government authorities.

Internal Controls and Compliance

  • Establish financial policies, approval procedures and internal controls.

  • Verify purchase orders, vendor invoices, receiving documents and customer credits.

  • Monitor customer credit limits and overdue accounts.

  • Maintain complete supporting documentation for financial and tax transactions.

  • Identify accounting errors, unusual transactions and potential financial risks.

  • Protect confidential company, employee, customer and supplier information.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.

  • CPA, ACCA, CA, CMA or equivalent professional qualification preferred.

  • Minimum five years of accounting experience.

  • Manufacturing, printing, packaging or corrugated-box industry experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience with domestic and international tax compliance.

  • Knowledge of sales tax, VAT/GST, payroll tax and import/export transactions.

  • Understanding of US GAAP; knowledge of IFRS is an advantage.

  • Experience with QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics or a comparable ERP/accounting system.

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial-analysis skills.

  • Strong understanding of inventory and manufacturing cost accounting.

  • Excellent attention to detail, organization and deadline management.

  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Accounting for multiple related companies or international locations.

  • E-commerce and merchant-payment reconciliation.

  • Customs duties, freight, landed-cost and international shipping calculations.

  • Printing estimating, production management or packaging ERP systems.

  • Working with external auditors and international tax advisers.

Performance Expectations

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Close monthly accounts accurately and on schedule.

  • Submit tax filings and payments before applicable deadlines.

  • Maintain accurate inventory and production-cost records.

  • Improve visibility into job-level profitability and cash flow.

  • Reduce accounting errors, overdue receivables and tax-compliance risks.
