Artificial Intelligence Engineer

Location: Remote (preference to local Washington, DC area)

Clearance: Public Trust

Employment Type: Full-time

Compensation: $160K - $180K DOE

Position Summary

Revolutional is seeking an Artificial Intelligence Engineer to design, build, train, and deploy AI and machine learning systems in support of an anticipated Veterans Affairs (VA) program. This role owns the technical thread from model development through production deployment and ongoing compliance — translating mission requirements into deployable AI/ML solutions while ensuring every AI System and Large Language Model (LLM) used in contract performance complies with VA’s Trustworthy AI Framework and the Unbiased AI Principles established under Executive Order 14319 and OMB Memorandum M-26-04. The ideal candidate is comfortable moving between hands-on model development and the documentation, monitoring, and reporting rigor required of AI systems in a federal environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, train, and deploy machine learning models and AI systems, including large language models (LLMs), in production enterprise and Government environments.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, software developers, and domain experts, to translate mission and business requirements into deployable AI solutions.

  • Perform data collection, cleaning, and analysis to prepare datasets for AI modeling.

  • Apply AI and machine learning solutions to real-world operational problems across VA business and mission areas.

  • Ensure all AI Systems and LLMs used in contract performance comply with E.O. 13960 and 14319, OMB Memoranda M-25-21, M-25-22, and M-26-04, and VA Directive and Handbook 6500.

  • Ensure AI System/LLM outputs are truthful and accurate, prioritize historical accuracy, scientific inquiry, and objectivity, and acknowledge uncertainty rather than fabricating or hallucinating information.

  • Ensure AI/LLM outputs remain neutral, nonpartisan tools, free of unauthorized or unintended ideological encoding, consistent with the Unbiased AI Principles.

  • Ensure no VA-sensitive data, PII, or PHI is entered into unapproved, publicly available generative AI services, and restrict use of generative AI to VA-hosted or CO-authorized instances only.

  • Develop and deliver the AI System/LLM Development and Operation Documentation Package, including the Acceptable Use Policy, Model/System/Data Cards, End User Resources, end user feedback mechanisms, pre-training and post-training activity documentation, model evaluation results and methodologies, description of enterprise-level controls, and third-party modification disclosures.

  • Prepare and submit Statements of Attestation prior to AI implementation, annually thereafter, and within required timelines upon introduction of any new AI tool.

  • Develop and implement a Compliance Monitoring and Reporting Plan to continuously evaluate AI outputs for compliance with Trustworthy AI and Unbiased AI principles, including a mechanism for end users to report suspected violations.

  • Identify and report material deviations from Trustworthy AI or Unbiased AI principles within required timelines, and develop Corrective Action Plans describing mitigation steps, responsible parties, and resolution timelines.

  • Prepare AI Model/LLM Change Disclosures in advance of material changes to AI models, including retraining, fine-tuning, new features or components, content moderation or filter changes, version replacement, or architectural changes.

  • Deliver all AI-related services, technical data, configurations, models, weights, documentation, and source code developed during contract performance, ensuring Government retains unlimited rights, and comply with SHARE IT Act requirements for custom-developed code.

  • Continuously evaluate emerging AI-enabled technologies and methodologies applicable to contract performance and provide recommendations to improve engineering efficiency, automation, and mission outcomes, ensuring all recommendations comply with applicable Federal law, OMB guidance, and VA AI policy.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in relevant fields including IT security, data science, or software engineering, of which at least 5 years involve the design, development, or deployment of AI or machine learning systems in enterprise or Government environments. A PhD in a related field (IT security, data science, or software engineering) may substitute for up to 5 years of the required experience

  • Expertise working on data science, machine learning, or AI projects, either through internships, research projects, or professional roles.

  • Expertise building, training, and deploying machine learning models and AI systems in a production environment.

  • Expertise collaborating with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, software developers, and domain experts.

  • Expertise in data collection, cleaning, and analysis techniques to prepare datasets for AI modeling.

  • Expertise applying AI solutions to real-world problems in various enterprises and domains such as large corporations and Government agencies similar in size/scope to GSA, IRS, DoD or VA

Required Qualification - Education

  • Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, Business Administration, Business Management, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Assurance, Information Security, Information Resource Management, or related fields.

Experience / Education Substitution

  • IAT III/ IAM III / IASAE III certifications may be substituted for a relevant Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of relevant experience

Required Certifications

  • Certification in one or more of the following: IAT Level III, IAM Level III, or IASAE Level III.
