Job description

This position will manage the team of Accountants in all assignments, including Catalyst’s contribution (gift) revenue and related reconciliations, allocations, and analysis. The position oversees fixed assets schedule, inventory, and capital purchases accounting. The position is also responsible for coordinating the organization’s tax reporting and related tax schedules, as well as assisting the Controller in preparation of the organization’s financials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services.

  • Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.

  • Maintains contact with the Agency community and solicits feedback for improved services.

  • Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools, planned training and performance initiatives.

  • Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow.

  • Prepares progress reports; informs the Controller of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of all operational functions.

  • Prepares and submits reports as requested and required.

  • Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the department.

**Managing Accounting Processes **

  • Train and manage Accountants with relation to accounting functions and gift revenue cycle and related reconciliations for pledges.

  • Manage and oversee all general ledger functions, maintaining a complete understanding of chart of accounts and general ledger structure.

  • Manage and ensure timely and accurate month-end, quarter-end and fiscal year-end accounting close process.

  • Ensure sound accounting practices and controls to support GAAP, FASB and OMB policy and instructions. Maintain and administer fundamental accounting internal controls including, account reconciliations, close schedules, etc.

  • Responsible for maintaining and understanding all agency cost allocation methodologies, including those related to indirect and administrative costs.

  • Manage and oversee the accounting information system, recommending changes and improvements for best practice and compliance requirements.

  • Respond to queries and provide guidance to the community and other departments in supporting their needs.

**Financial Reporting **

  • Act as a resource to other departments by answering questions and providing training.

  • Develop training curriculum and publish a comprehensive FAQ document to answer department questions.

  • Assist in maintenance of financial forms and reference documents on the Agency’s SharePoint page.

  • Analyze data in order to provide meaningful information to Controller and leadership to support business decision making.

  • Monitor and provide oversight over department budgets to rectify any deficits and/or budget overages.

  • Review journal entries necessary for departments, ensuring Agency’s procedures are followed.

  • Provide Financial System training to team members within supported departments.

  • Analyze restricted funds and other revenue activities to support net asset roll forwards.

  • Assist with preparation of year end financials, workpapers, and related audit schedules.

  • Train, manage and delegate the tasks associated with preparation of applicable schedules for annual financial audit and annual Income Tax Return.

**Tax Reporting **

  • Coordinate with the Agency’s external tax preparer to plan, compile and analyze data to facilitate the annual Income Tax Return (Federal and State) filing.

  • Work with Agency’s various departments to obtain information needed for the tax return.

  • Gather and analyze Agency’s tax forms for due diligent.

  • Prepare and distribute the annual tax questionnaire sent to Agency officers, directors, key employees, and board members and compile results to incorporate in the tax return.

  • Evaluate Agency’s policies for nonprofit tax matters, such as sales tax certificate, and compliance.

  • Coordinate across departments to suggest and implement necessary changes. Expand and publish documentation of procedures for perpetuity.

  • Develop and monitor policies, procedures, and processes that comply with tax regulations.

  • Research and remain informed about new Agency initiatives and changing laws that impact nonprofit organizations within the early childhood education sector.

  • Supervise preparation of sales and use tax returns, property tax filing across operational locations.

Auditing

  • Prepare statistical/financial management reports, year-end account audit schedules as needed.

  • Work with others to ensure related processes flow effectively and efficiently.

  • Utilizing available technology, review policies and procedures and propose changes to improve effectiveness in executing responsibilities.

  • Continue to develop expertise with available technology

  • Other tasks as assigned

Required Qualifications: Experience in lieu of education is to be counted as part of formal Education and not as part of the required experience** .

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or Finance, or CPA equivalent.

  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years of relevant experience in finance or accounting environment.

  • Prior experience in supervision and management of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in second languages.

  • Advanced degree is highly preferred.

  • Non-profit accounting and government fund and/or grant management experience strongly preferred.

**Key Competencies: **

  • Proven problem-solving and analytical skills, including the ability to identify a problem, develop a solution, and implement that solution in cooperation with others or independently.

  • Must possess strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

  • Strong customer service focus with an emphasis on outreach to departments; ability to listen to understand the unique needs of each department.

  • Experience in fund accounting, fund management, knowledge of federal programs and regulations preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, FASB, GASB, and Nonprofit accounting standards.

  • Experience coordinating banking relationships including merchant services preferred.

  • Experience with major administration systems such as Financial Edge desired. Preferably possess advanced knowledge of data query and reporting tools (power BI).

  • Excellent advanced Excel and other computer applications computer skills.

  • Ability to interpret and apply complex rules and regulations relating to contract, indirect cost, and allocations.

  • Possess a high degree of initiative, attention to detail and follow through, as well as ability to adjust to changing requirements and priorities.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to function as a team player who can interact with others at all levels to accomplish goals in an efficient, productive and collaborative manner

Working Conditions:

  • Generally pleasant working conditions.

  • Less than 50% of daily assignments involve prolonged physical effort.

**Shift Type: ** Full Time, Exempt

**Schedule: ** Monday - Friday, 8 hours per day, Hybrid 3 days in office
