Assistant Controller
MGT Insurance
Job description
ABOUT MGT INSURANCE
MGT is the first AI-driven, neo-insurer focused on evolving commercial P&C insurance for the brokers and small business owners. By combining the expertise of industry veterans with state-of-the-art technology, we are ushering in the next evolution of commercial insurance and working to move the industry forward through the use of modern technology, better processes, and a rock-star team. We seek visionary leaders who thrive in dynamic, entrepreneurial settings, and excel in autonomous roles.
About the Role
MGT Insurance is seeking an Assistant Controller to lead our accounting operations.
As MGT continues to scale we are hiring an Assistant Controller who will take ownership of the monthly close, accounting controls, financial controls and external audit.
In this role, you will oversee the close and reporting process across five consolidated entities under both GAAP and statutory accounting requirements. You will lead and develop the accounting team, strengthen our control environment, and serve as the primary relationship owner for our external auditors. You will do so on a modern technology platform built substantially in house.
MGT is an AI-first company, and that commitment extends to the accounting function as well as to the product. Automated pipelines and AI agents perform a growing share of reconciliation work. Professional judgment remains the control that gates the close.
Your First Twelve Months
Three initiatives will define the first stretch of this role:
-
Implement close management software. Close-management software is on our technology roadmap, and you will lead the implementation on top of NetSuite โ defining the close checklist, reconciliation templates, review hierarchy, and sign-off trail. The objective is to move the close from institutional knowledge into a documented, auditable system.
-
Establish balance sheet integrity across all five entities. Define and enforce a company-wide account reconciliation standard covering ownership, frequency, supporting documentation, and review. You will own the subledger-to-general-ledger tie-outs for premium receivable, commissions payable, and cash, and drive aged reconciling items to resolution.
-
Establish audit and examination readiness at scale. Documented accounting policy, evidence captured at the source, clear statutory-to-GAAP bridges, and a PBC process that scales with the business.
What You'll Do
Own the close. Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close across all five entities. Serve as the primary reviewer, approving journal entries, reconciliations, roll-forwards, and flux analyses prepared by the team. Set the close calendar and hold the organization to it.
Manage GAAP and statutory reporting. Deliver the consolidated GAAP financial statements and the statutory financial statements reviewed by regulators and rating agencies. Own the annual and quarterly NAIC statements, state insurance department filings, and premium tax filings across our licensed footprint. Maintain a clear, well-documented statutory-to-GAAP bridge.
Manage the audit. Serve as the primary liaison to financial auditor, our external auditors, coordinating the PBC list, managing timelines, and resolving technical matters directly. Support the preparation of responses to financial examinations and regulatory inquiries.
Author accounting policy. Prepare technical accounting memoranda for non-standard transactions, including new program structures, reinsurance arrangements, product launches, and entity changes. Establish and maintain the accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls required to support the company's growth.
Lead the team. Lead and develop the accounting team. Set priorities, review work product, invest in the professional growth of your staff, and foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
Build and automate the systems. Own the accounting architecture in NetSuite and partner with Engineering, Data Science, and FP&A on the data pipelines that move policy, claims, and billing information into the general ledger. Our environment includes NetSuite, Ramp, Stripe, and Aleph, alongside proprietary policy administration, billing, and AI-enabled data services developed in house, as well as Claude, which our accounting team uses daily. Identify recurring manual work and treat automation as the default solution.
Partner beyond Finance. Work directly with Operations, Product, Engineering, Data, Actuarial, and FP&A. A meaningful portion of this role involves data and systems work in addition to traditional accounting responsibilities.
