About the Opportunity:

The Backend Engineer, AI Engineering: Duo Chat develops and maintains backend systems that power a conversational AI experience within the platform. This role focuses on building agentic runtime components, integrating AI chat capabilities with the core product, and improving system quality, security, scalability, and performance. The position works closely with product, UX, frontend, and engineering teams in a distributed environment.

Responsibilities:

• Develop secure, well-tested, and high-performance backend features for the AI chat system.

• Implement and extend agentic workflows using Python and LangGraph.

• Integrate chat functionality with the core Rails monolith and GraphQL API.

• Write maintainable, scalable code suitable for high-scale production environments.

• Participate in code reviews and collaborate with external contributors.

• Identify and address technical debt to improve reliability and team efficiency.

• Collaborate with Product Management, UX, Frontend, and other engineering teams.

• Participate in on-call rotations to troubleshoot operational, reliability, and security issues.

Requirements:

• Professional experience developing production services with Python.

• Working knowledge of Ruby on Rails or willingness to learn.

• Interest or experience in large language model applications and agent orchestration.

• Experience with API design and performance optimization.

• Strong understanding of security-focused software development practices.

• Clear written communication skills for remote and asynchronous collaboration.

• Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and seek assistance when needed.

• Alignment with remote collaboration practices and organizational values.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with LangGraph, LangChain, or similar agent orchestration frameworks.

• Experience with GraphQL and RSpec.

• Familiarity with the organization’s product as a user or contributor.

• Experience working on remote, distributed engineering teams.

Pay Range and Compensation Package:

• United States salary range: $115,200–$194,400 USD.

• Compensation represents base salary and excludes bonuses, equity, and benefits.

• Final salary is determined based on experience, education, skills, and location.

• Sales roles may have additional incentive compensation eligibility.
