JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Senior Director, Revenue & Analytics, the BI Developer owns the data platform behind everything this company measures: the SQL Server warehouse, the pipelines that feed it from every operating system we run, and the automations that take manual work off Finance, Sales, Revenue, Marketing and Operations.
This is the senior technical seat on a small team covering six hotels, roughly 2,000 rooms and close to 40 businesses. You would own the platform, set how it is built, and bring on a junior developer alongside you. The team is measured in manual hours removed, dollars saved and revenue generated — not tickets closed.
We built and own our warehouse rather than living inside brand reporting, which means the decisions about how it works are ours to make, and yours to shape. Several source systems have never been connected to anything. This is a build role, and an unusually open one.
WHAT YOU WOULD ACTUALLY BE DOING
Four parts, biggest first.
-
The platform (about 35%). Own the warehouse and the pipelines feeding it — property management, sales and catering, point of sale, payroll, the finance ERP and vendor APIs. Some are clean connections; plenty are files that land overnight and change layout without warning. You decide how it is modelled and where it goes next.
-
Automation that removes manual work (about 30%). Whole departments still do work by hand — A/R billing, group invoicing, month-end packs, gratuity sheets. You take a process apart, rebuild it as something that runs itself, and prove the hours came out. This is where the team is judged.
-
The tools the business runs on (about 20%). Self-contained HTML reporting backed by SQL stored procedures — pace and pick-up, inventory calendars, group and prospect reports, quality dashboards. Revenue and Sales price off these.
-
Bringing on the junior (about 15%). You would have a junior developer to review, teach and grow. How quickly they become useful is part of how this role is measured.
YOU WOULD BE GOOD AT THIS IF
-
You write serious T-SQL — window functions, stored procedures, query tuning, and an instinct for why something got slow.
-
You are fluent in Python for data work — pandas, database connections, file wrangling — and at home on the command line and in Git.
-
You have owned something end to end — not just worked a ticket queue. We need someone who can decide, not only implement.
-
You are good with messy sources — no API, layouts that shift, a transaction code that quietly stops being posted. Noticing that is half the job.
-
You can sit with the person doing the manual work — a clerk in Accounts Receivable, a sales manager, a chef — and come back with something they will use.
-
You build with AI as a matter of course — this team ships with AI-assisted development every day, and it is a large part of how a small team covers this much ground.
-
You want to teach someone — the junior beside you is part of the job, not a distraction from it.
IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS
-
Four or more years building and running data platforms in production — the title may have been BI Developer, Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer or Database Developer.
-
Strong SQL Server / T-SQL and Python, source control, and job scheduling or orchestration.
-
Experience replacing legacy ETL (SSIS or similar) with code, and connecting systems that were never designed to be connected.
-
Evidence you can work without close supervision. You would be the most senior technical person on this team.
-
An asset: HTML and JavaScript front ends, DuckDB / Parquet, Power BI or Tableau, Excel VBA.
-
An asset: hospitality, restaurant or retail data — PMS, POS or payroll systems. Not required; the systems are learnable, the engineering is the harder half.
YOUR FIRST SIX MONTHS
-
Month 1 — Learn the warehouse and the businesses behind it, and take stock of what needs attention first.
-
Months 2–3 — Take ownership of the pipelines, and put your own stamp on how the next things get built.
-
Months 4–6 — Ship a significant automation, and have the junior developer contributing on their own.
