Job description

Position Type: Contract

Position Overview

We are seeking a Bridge Software Verification Engineer to support the testing, verification, and validation of software applications used for bridge design and load-rating activities. This position combines bridge engineering expertise with software testing responsibilities to ensure that engineering calculations, application functionality, configuration changes, and software revisions produce accurate and reliable results.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with bridge design or bridge load rating and a strong understanding of applicable engineering standards, including AASHTO LRFD specifications and PennDOT DM4. The role will perform engineering-level verification of software calculations, execute end-to-end testing using established verification examples, compare results between software versions, and validate configuration changes within the EngAsst application.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering verification of software calculations and results affected by application revisions or enhancements.

  • Review engineering calculations and software-generated results for accuracy and compliance with applicable engineering standards.

  • Apply knowledge of AASHTO LRFD specifications and PennDOT DM4 requirements when verifying engineering results.

  • Document engineering verification activities and results using Microsoft Excel and/or MathCAD.

  • Execute established batch verification examples to perform end-to-end testing of bridge engineering applications.

  • Compare results from test versions of applications against results from previous software versions.

  • Investigate differences identified during automated or electronic result comparisons.

  • Determine whether differences are attributable to known software changes, engineering changes, configuration changes, or potential defects.

  • Verify changes to EngAsst configuration files resulting from documentation, input, or application changes.

  • Confirm that EngAsst configuration changes function correctly and produce expected results.

  • Support regression testing to ensure existing application functionality remains accurate following software revisions.

  • Maintain and execute verification examples designed to exercise application functionality.

  • Identify, document, and communicate discrepancies or unexpected results.

  • Work with software development and engineering personnel to investigate and resolve testing and verification issues.

  • Ensure testing and verification activities are performed in accordance with established engineering and software quality processes.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in bridge design or bridge load rating.

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or the ability to perform work under the supervision of a Professional Engineer licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

  • Knowledge of AASHTO LRFD specifications.

  • Knowledge of PennDOT DM4 requirements and applicable bridge engineering practices.

  • Experience reviewing and validating engineering calculations and results.

  • Ability to analyze differences between software-generated engineering results and expected results.

  • Experience documenting calculations, testing results, and verification activities.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.

  • Ability to work with engineering calculation tools such as MathCAD.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to identify discrepancies and determine potential causes.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to work effectively with both engineering and software development teams.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience testing or validating software applications used for bridge design, bridge analysis, or bridge load rating.

  • Experience with engineering software verification, validation, or quality assurance.

  • Experience performing unit testing or regression testing of engineering applications.

  • Experience performing end-to-end or batch testing of software applications.

  • Familiarity with EngAsst or similar engineering software configuration environments.

  • Experience comparing engineering software results across application versions.

  • Experience working with PennDOT bridge engineering applications or systems.

  • Experience with automated or electronic comparison of software test results.

  • Familiarity with software development and software testing processes.

  • Experience working in environments where engineering calculations must be independently verified and documented.
