Job description

The Business Analyst is responsible for developing a comprehensive understanding of the University’s spending patterns and effectively communicating key insights to internal stakeholders across various departments. By analyzing expense transactions and related financial data, the Business Analyst provides meaningful, data-driven intelligence that supports strategic decision-making. This role works closely with the Director of Procurement Technology Services to identify trends, uncover opportunities for cost savings, and inform the development of procurement strategies that align with the University’s goals and priorities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collects, organizes, and analyzes transactional spend data, patterns, and anomalies from multiple systems.

  • Develop and deliver dashboards, reports, and visualizations based on requests and to communicate findings.

  • Creates an organizational spend map that outlines key spend characteristics.

  • Assists with KPI, RFI, Strategic Plan, Health Check, and executive reporting requests.

  • Categorize transactions as needed to summarize spend by key characteristics.

  • Summarizes analysis into reports and communicates results to key stakeholders.

  • Trains and supports stakeholders in the use of the University’s procurement reporting systems.

  • Contributes to supplier rationalization decisions based on spend analysis.

  • Assists in establishing procurement analytics strategies based on data insights and trends.

  • Supports Procurement staff by providing ad-hoc spend analysis as needed. Present findings and recommendations to leadership and relevant teams.

  • Actively pursues means of automating data processing and analysis processes.

  • Develops a strong technical understanding of the procurement systems in use.

  • Collaborates with IT/ADS/BuyLU teams on procurement data requests/changes/modifications.

  • Responsible for the analytics modules within our procurement systems.

  • Support the implementation and maintenance of procurement analytics tools. Ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity of all procurement data.

  • Recommend improvements to systems or processes that enhance data visibility and usability.

  • Translate complex datasets into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.

  • Regularly pursues professional development.

  • Performs other duties and assists in procurement projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in Analytics, Business; significant additional experience may substitute.

  • Two-to-four years of professional experience in business analytics, budgeting, accounting and/or financial analysis

  • Experience with databases and large datasets and its application to business strategy.

  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills, with the ability to produce thorough, precise work while effectively prioritizing and managing multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Working knowledge of procurement and source-to-pay software systems.

  • Well-developed reasoning, communication, and customer service skills.

  • Strong computer skills including effective use of MS Office software, Outlook, and Teams.

  • Strong technical and business writing and presentation skills.

  • Ability to articulate and defend the unique Christian educational mission and vision of Liberty University and its subsidiaries to a wide variety of individuals and groups.

  • Individual must not be in default on any federal student or parent loan.

  • Individual must not be convicted of, or pled nolo contendere or guilty to, a crime involving the acquisition, use, or expenditure of federal, state, or local government funds, or be administratively or judicially determined to have committed fraud or any other material violation of law involving federal, state, or local government funds (CFR 668.14(b)(18)(i)).

Minimum Qualifications Level I

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in Analytics, Business; significant additional experience may substitute.

  • Two-to-four years of professional experience in business analytics, budgeting, accounting and/or financial analysis

  • Experience with databases and large datasets and their application to business strategy.

Minimum Qualifications Level II

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in Business, Finance, Accounting or a related field; significant additional experience may substitute.

  • Five to seven years of professional experience in business analytics, budgeting, accounting and/or financial analysis.

  • Experience with databases and large datasets and their application to business strategy.

  • International Institution of Business Analysis (IIBA) certification or equivalent in Business Analytics.

Minimum Qualifications Level III

  • Master’s of Business Administration or Master’s Degree in Finance or Accounting or related field; significant additional experience may substitute.

  • Eight or more years of professional experience in business analytics, budgeting, accounting and/or financial analysis.

  • Advanced experience with databases and large datasets and their application to business strategy.

  • International Institution of Business Analysis (IIBA) certification or equivalent in Business Analytics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • International Institution of Business Analysis (IIBA) certification or equivalent in Business Analytics.

  • Master’s of Business Administration or Master’s Degree in Finance or Accounting or related field.

  • Lean or Six Sigma Experience/Certification

  • Strong experience using Jaggaer & Infor, or any, source-to-pay procurement software.

  • Fluency in Spanish or American Sign Language.

Communication and Comprehension

Ability to effectively understand and communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, in a clear, articulate, and professional manner, conveying complex ideas and information.

Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business, government and community customers and associates.

Excellent computer skills including detailed knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.

Strong organizational skills.

Problem Solving

  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.

  • Strong organizational skills, with ability to manage changes in priorities as need arises.

Physical and Sensory Abilities

  • Occasionally required to travel to locations throughout Virginia and occasionally out of state.

  • Frequently requires sitting for extended periods to perform deskwork and efficiently and accurately interface with computer systems via keyboard and mouse.

  • Regularly required to hear and speak to effectively communicate orally, including use of phone, video conferencing software, instant chat, and other communication methods.

  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the workplace.

  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop to conduct business.

  • Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment

The work environment to typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled office environment, including a mix of cubicles and offices, with moderate noise levels. Additional time may be spent in internal customer work areas and warehouse environments.   

Driving Requirements

Use of one’s personal vehicle is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position.  Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.

** Pay Range**

Compensation is determined based on factors such as qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, along with University needs and external market conditions. Market benchmarks may be used, as appropriate, in combination with internal equity to ensure pay is fair and aligned with the broader compensation structure.

The position may also be eligible for comprehensive benefits , including health insurance, retirement plans, and tuition assistance.
