Data Analyst I (MPSB)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Data Analyst I (MPSB) based in the United States.

This role will support public health surveillance focused on blood, organs, and other tissue safety within the Medical Product Safety Branch. You will contribute to the management, validation, analysis, and reporting of surveillance data used to identify and prevent transfusion-related adverse events. The position combines data analysis with technical support, user engagement, training, and continuous improvement of public health surveillance systems. You will collaborate with healthcare facilities, patient safety organizations, health departments, technical teams, and public health stakeholders. Your work will help improve the quality, usability, and reliability of surveillance information used to advance patient safety. Accountabilities:

• Maintain technical content for protocols, surveillance definitions, and data collection forms supporting the NHSN Biovigilance Component, including the hemovigilance module, and review surveillance methodologies at least annually.

• Develop and deliver training for healthcare facilities participating in the NHSN Biovigilance Component, update self-paced training materials annually, and conduct recurring training webinars.

• Respond to user inquiries, provide enrollment assistance, and help participating facilities correctly apply CDC surveillance definitions, criteria, and data-entry requirements.

• Collaborate with patient safety organizations, quality improvement organizations, and health departments on transfusion-related adverse event surveillance initiatives.

• Develop and maintain analysis and reporting capabilities within the surveillance system and implement required updates on an annual basis.

• Manage change requests and implementation activities with the NHSN development team, including documenting requirements, submitting requests, and testing and validating software releases.

• Investigate application defects, coordinate with quality assurance teams to communicate issues and verify fixes, and provide updates to affected users.

• Perform data management, validation, and cleaning activities, including working directly with users to resolve data-entry issues and improve data quality.

• Identify opportunities to improve the usability and application of hemovigilance surveillance data for prevention and patient safety efforts.

• Support the development and enhancement of surveillance modules and electronic reporting mechanisms.

• Communicate with users and provide technical expertise to improve user interfaces, functionality, and group-management capabilities.

• Collaborate with communications specialists to support initiatives promoting transfusion safety and patient safety strategies.

• Participate in recurring technical, development, user-support, and program meetings to coordinate priorities and address operational needs.

• Support hemovigilance activities, including investigations of transfusion-transmitted disease reports and the National Blood Collection and Utilization Survey, covering protocol development, dissemination, and data management.

• Participate in public health response activities and training exercises, including supporting emergency operations activities when directed by program leadership.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Data Science, Public Health, or a related field.

• 1–2 years of experience conducting public health data analysis, including manipulating, cleaning, analyzing, and reporting data using statistical functions; candidates with a master’s degree and 3–5 years of relevant experience are preferred.

• Proficiency with statistical and analytical software such as SAS, R, Python, or similar tools.

• Knowledge of data management systems and experience applying data management software to analytical or research activities.

• Understanding of public health research and evaluation principles, methods, and techniques, with the ability to analyze information and provide informed recommendations.

• Familiarity with scientific methods, technologies, and practices relevant to public health data and surveillance.

• Knowledge of program development, monitoring, and evaluation procedures, including applicable government processes and guidelines.

• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Teams, and SharePoint.

• Strong analytical judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently while successfully managing multiple priorities.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical information clearly and effectively.

• Highly organized and detail-oriented, with a strong commitment to data accuracy and quality.

• Ability to obtain and maintain a CDC Public Trust Clearance.

• Previous experience working with the CDC is highly desirable, particularly for candidates who understand the organization's culture and operating environment.
