Job description

About the Role

Alvion is working with Richmond International Airport to hire a Data Engineer.

Richmond International Airport is modernizing its enterprise and operational technology environment and building the data capability needed to run and grow the airport on better information. The Data Engineer will play a central role in that effort.

This is a hands-on, build-from-the-ground-up position responsible for designing and developing the airport’s data ecosystem. You will connect operational and commercial systems into a centralized data repository, build production-grade pipelines and integrations, develop data models and APIs, and turn raw information into trusted, reporting-ready datasets.

The environment is broad and operationally complex, with data coming from systems such as flight information displays, passenger processing, baggage handling, gate and apron management, parking, property and concession management, passenger-flow sensing, CRM, and enterprise ERP/EPM platforms.

What You’ll Do

  • Help define and establish the Commission’s enterprise data architecture, including data models, schemas, integration patterns, data standards, and a centralized repository for airport data.

  • Design and maintain production-grade ETL/ELT pipelines across enterprise and operational systems.

  • Build ingestion processes for REST APIs, relational databases, structured files, vendor feeds, IoT sources, and other application interfaces.

  • Select appropriate integration approaches, including batch, near-real-time, and event-driven processing.

  • Develop and support system-to-system integrations using APIs, middleware, iPaaS platforms, file exchange, and other practical integration methods.

  • Transform raw source data into standardized, analytics-ready datasets and data models.

  • Establish monitoring, logging, exception handling, reconciliation, recovery, and data-quality processes for production pipelines.

  • Build curated datasets and structures that support dashboards, recurring reporting, ad hoc analysis, and future advanced-analytics use cases.

  • Partner with application owners, business stakeholders, vendors, consultants, and IT leadership to understand source systems, integration constraints, data ownership, and reporting needs.

  • Maintain technical documentation including architecture diagrams, data-flow diagrams, data dictionaries, integration specifications, procedures, and support runbooks.

What We’re Looking For

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related discipline; equivalent professional experience may be considered.

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in data engineering, software/data integration, data-platform development, or a closely related field.

  • Strong SQL skills and hands-on experience designing and working with relational databases.

  • Proficiency in Python for data processing, integration, automation, or application development.

  • Experience designing, developing, and supporting ETL/ELT pipelines.

  • Experience designing data models and database structures.

  • Experience integrating enterprise applications through REST APIs, middleware or iPaaS platforms, file exchange, direct database extraction, or similar methods.

  • Experience with dimensional or analytical modeling approaches such as Star Schema and/or Data Vault.

  • Experience building and maintaining production data pipelines using source control, documented deployment practices, and separate development and production environments.

  • Experience with data quality, reconciliation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas is beneficial:

  • Oracle Integration Cloud or comparable iPaaS platforms such as Azure Data Factory, MuleSoft, etc.

  • Oracle Fusion ERP, Oracle EPM, or comparable enterprise financial platforms

  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or Microsoft Azure

  • Oracle Analytics/OTBI, Power BI, or comparable analytics platforms

  • Establishing a new enterprise data platform, data warehouse, or centralized repository

  • Operational, IoT, facilities, physical-security, transportation, or other nontraditional enterprise data sources

  • Airport, transportation, critical-infrastructure, public-sector, or similarly complex operating environments

Aviation experience is helpful but not required.

What Success Looks Like – Key Deliverables for the Role

  • Integrated Airport Data Repository

    — a centralized repository that houses historical and current data from priority operational and commercial systems, accommodating both structured and unstructured sources.

  • Automated Data Pipelines

    — production-grade, version-controlled workflows that ingest data from airport systems without manual intervention, including automated replacement of the manual reconciliation between airfield activity data and the property and revenue system.

  • Trusted Revenue and Operations Datasets

    — reconciled, reporting-ready datasets covering passenger enplanements, cargo and aircraft landed weights, gate utilization and aircraft dwell time, and parking and concession performance.

  • Operational API Layer

    — a suite of internal APIs that allow working groups to pull current operational information from airport systems (for example, security wait times and baggage retrieval times).

  • Security and Passenger Flow Datasets

    — the ingestion design and data model for passenger flow sensing, and cleaned datasets tracking dwell time and terminal movement as that sensing capability is deployed.

  • Compliance and Regulatory Reporting Engine

    — automated recurring reports with an audit trail demonstrating that reported data is complete and unaltered.

  • Initial Dashboards

    — a first wave of dashboards supporting priority operational, commercial, and leadership needs, built on documented datasets that others can extend.

Additional Information

This is an on-site position at Richmond International Airport in Richmond, Virginia. The role participates in a scheduled on-call rotation supporting production data integrations and reporting systems.

Candidates must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License and be able to obtain and maintain eligibility for a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge.

Benefits include health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, 401(k) matching, and paid time off.

Capital Region Airport Commission is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
