Job description

Job Overview:

This is a newly created role within Sleater Solutions and reflective of the volume of growth within the organisation. The role of the Design Engineer will be to seamlessly bridge the gap between 3D modelling and electrical schematics using EPLAN, Solidworks, AutoCAD Electrical, WSCAD etc., blending technical precision with multi-platform fluency.

This role will be responsible for the end-to-end design, development and documentation of electrical control systems and automation equipment. They will translate complex engineering requirements into functional electrical schematics and 3D layouts, ensuring all designs meet industry standards and client specifications creating clean, compliant and production-ready drawings in a timely manner.

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Schematic design – develop comprehensive electrical wiring diagrams, control panel layouts and PIDs using relevant tools (e.g. EPLAN WSCAD, AutoCAD Electrical)

  • 3D Modelling – Utilise EPLAN/Solidworks to design 3D enclosures, cable routing and component placements to ensure spatial accuracy.

  • Drawing Design – create clean, compliant and production ready drawings in a timely manner.

  • System Integration – Design control systems for electrical automation, including PLC I/O configurations, motor control circuits and safety systems.

  • Technical Documentation – Generate accurate material bills, cable schedules, and terminal diagrams for production and installation teams.

  • Project Collaboration – Work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure electrical designs integrate perfectly with mechanical hardware and automation code.

  • Compliance Safety – Ensure all designs adhere to relevant Irish and/or International regularly standards and quality protocols.

  • Ensure compliance with all standards, procedures and regulatory requirements

  • Address any employee issues that arise, taking corrective action without delay, liaising with HR where appropriate.

  • Give regular feedback utilising various management tools in place (e.g. probationary assessments, performance reviews, IDPs etc.)

  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement across the team

Travel

  • This role is office based in Sligo with no regular requirement to travel domestically/overseas.

Essential Skills Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or related technical field

  • 3+ years’ proven experience in an electrical automation or heavy engineering environment.

  • Advanced proficiency in EPLAN Solidworks preferably.

  • In-depth understanding of electrical control panel design, LV switchgear and automation components (e.g. PLCs, VFDs, Sensors etc.)

  • Expert knowledge of electrical symbols, circuit protection and wiring regulations

  • Have a methodical structured approach to documentation and systems development

  • ability to troubleshoot complex issues and devise solutions

  • be adaptive, innovative and flexible in meeting challenges and changes that arise.

  • ability to listen and understand so to design detailed electrical control systems and schematics using WSCAD, AutoCAD etc. and create 3D models of electrical assemblies, enclosures and cable harnesses in EPlan Solidworks.

  • ability to manage oneself effectively and manage the time effectively, prioritizing tasks and organising effective work-flows.

  • ability to motivate and inspire team, bringing them with you on this journey of innovative change through direct engagement, leading by example, reviews and mentoring

Desirable Competencies

  • Master’s degree or Professional Engineer status

  • Determine new solutions for issues or requirements either not yet identified or determined

Particulars of the Position

  • 6-month probation period is applicable, upon successful completion, will be deemed a contract of indefinite duration.

  • Reports directly to the Program Director

  • Newly created role - available immediately
