Spirasi: A Place of Healing, Hope, and Impact

Spirasi is the national centre in Ireland for the rehabilitation of survivors of torture. We assist individuals and their families in rebuilding their lives after torture and forced displacement. Spirasi is also an independent and objective provider of medico-legal reports for international protection-related cases.

Position summary:

With the use of the Istanbul Protocol, the UN manual on the investigation and documentation of torture, the role of the examining physician is to produce Medico Legal Reports which document the physical and/or psychological findings of torture to which an individual has been subjected. You will be working as part of a physician team, supported by a medical team lead and Rehabilitation Manager. Training and guidelines are provided on writing the reports and the use of Istanbul Protocol.

Main Responsibilities

-The role of the doctor in accordance with the international medical and legal standards set out in The Istanbul Protocol is to:

·       take a full, accurate and as relevant a history as the client can provide

·       carry out a physical exam and psychological assessment

·       communicate the physical and psychological findings and interpretations effectively

·       provide an opinion on the degree to which these findings support the client’s allegation of torture

-To conduct each assessment with trauma informed care.

-The examining physician is required to consider the feedback given by legal reviewers before finalising each medico legal report.

-The examining physician will be required to work with interpreters to conduct some assessments.

-The examining physician is required to engage in training and peer support meetings including supervision.

Spirasi, 213 North Circular Road, Phibsboro, Dublin 7 with hybrid working in accordance with Spirasi Hybrid working policy.

Person Specification – Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

Essential

  • Strong reporting skills, written and numeric, excellent command of the English language

(If non-native language speaker, has attained at least IELTS level 7)

  • Currently Registered with the Irish Medical Council.

  • Hold MICGP qualification or equivalent.

  • IT proficient.

  • Ability to work as equal part of a multi-disciplinary team, including mental health and

social work professionals.

  • Ability to work as part of a physicians’ team committed to developing the highest

standard of Legal reporting and assessment for torture survivors.

-Ability to maintain health boundaries and self-care practices to maintain personal wellbeing

  • Commitment to the mission and values of Spirasi.

Desirable

  • Experience in the production of Medico legal reports.

  • Second language.

  • Experience working in an intercultural setting and knowledge of cultural humility/competence.

  • Experience of working with vulnerable groups or humanitarian work

  • Flexible and positive outlook.
