About the Role

As an experienced Mechanical Designer, you’ll take ownership of designing complex mechanical systems for our automated machinery, working from concept through to production. This role is ideal for someone confident, independent, and motivated by solving challenging engineering problems.

Key Responsibilities

· Create 3D CAD models and mechanical assemblies in SolidWorks

· Read, interpret and apply engineering documentation and standards confidently.

· Develop various creative, robust design solutions (regardless of industry).

· Articulate design reasoning such as material choice, tolerances, and manufacturing considerations.

· Actively seek solutions to problems and take initiative in technical decision‑making.

· Lead the design and development of complex mechanisms for automated machinery.

· Perform engineering calculations and validate design decisions.

· Produce and update technical drawings, BOMs, and supporting documentation.

· Apply engineering best practice, DFM principles, and hygienic design principles.

· Support prototyping, testing, and validation of designs during development.

· Work closely with manufacturing and assembly teams to ensure smooth production process.

· Identify design improvements and contribute to innovation across the product range.

· Optimise workflows, improve design processes, and contribute to departmental best practice.

· Manage workload efficiently and can prioritise tasks in a fast‑paced environment.

· Provide support and guidance to junior members of the design team when required.

Required Skills & Qualifications

· Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.

· Several years’ experience in mechanical design within machinery, automation, robotics, food equipment, or similar industries.

· Confident producing engineering drawings and BOMs.

· Solid understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, materials, and manufacturing processes.

· Strong grasp of DFM principles and practical tolerancing.

· Proactive problem‑solver with the ability to develop practical and innovative solutions.

Desirable Criteria

· Experience designing food‑safe or hygienic machinery.

· Skilled in designing mechanisms with moving components, pneumatics, and sensor integration.

· Strong hands‑on engineering ability; comfortable working with workshop teams.

· PLC or controls system knowledge (basic understanding or exposure welcome).

· Experience working in a factory or production environment.

· Ability to work cross‑functionally with assembly, manufacturing, electrical, and controls teams.

Pay: £35,000.00-£48,000.00 per year
