Yanmar Compact Equipment North America designs, manufactures and supports a complete range of compact equipment including compact track loaders, mini excavators, wheel loaders and construction equipment for use in such markets as construction, landscaping, utility, land management and agriculture.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are looking to add a Machine Controls System Engineer to our talented Engineering Team in Grand Rapids, MN.

WHAT YOU'D DO

The Machine Controls Software Engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains software that controls heavy equipment, including compact track loaders, mini excavators, and wheel loaders. This role helps ensure our equipment operates safely, reliably, and efficiently in demanding working environments. Working closely with engineering, product development, and testing teams, this position develops embedded software solutions, supports system integration, and contributes to the continuous improvement of machine performance and functionality.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, implement, and maintain embedded software used in machine control, engine control, display, and telematics systems.

  • Analyze and develop system and software requirements to support product functionality and performance objectives.

  • Create software architectures, designs, and interfaces between software components and system layers.

  • Write, modify, and maintain source code for embedded systems and related applications.

  • Develop and execute test plans, test procedures, and validation activities to verify software performance and quality.

  • Debug and troubleshoot software issues using appropriate development and diagnostic tools.

  • Support integration activities involving software, electronics, sensors, and other hardware components.

  • Evaluate system performance and recommend improvements to functionality, reliability, and efficiency.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout product development, testing, and production.

  • Provide technical support for production and post-production software-related issues.

  • Document software requirements, designs, test results, and development activities in accordance with company standards.

A chronic tinkerer who is passionate about machine systems and may still like to play in the dirt who also meets these key qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering field from an accredited institution.

  • Experience developing software for embedded systems.

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages used in embedded system development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing software for off-highway, construction, agricultural, industrial, or mobile equipment.

  • Experience with hydraulic control systems.

  • Experience with machine control or engine control applications.

  • Experience working with telematics, displays, or operator interface systems.

  • Familiarity with CAN bus and SAE J1939 communication protocols.

  • Experience developing and testing software using C, Plus+1 GUIDE, Python, VBA, or similar programming tools.

  • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS).

  • Understanding of object-oriented programming and software design patterns.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and develop effective solutions.

  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and translate them into software designs and functional solutions.

  • Knowledge of software development processes, tools, and best practices.

  • Understanding of software testing, verification, and validation methodologies.

  • Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software integration issues.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Primarily works in an office and engineering environment.

  • May occasionally work in manufacturing, laboratory, or outdoor testing environments.

  • May be required to operate or observe heavy equipment during testing and validation activities.

  • Ability to travel occasionally to customer sites, suppliers, testing facilities, or company locations as needed.
