About the role

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team and contribute to the design and development of industrial mechanical equipment for power transmission systems.

This is an opportunity for an experienced mechanical engineer to take ownership of engineering designs from initial customer requirements through to detailed design, manufacture and technical support.

The successful candidate will also play an important role in providing technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers within the team.

Key responsibilities

·       Design and develop mechanical equipment, components and assemblies.

·       Develop engineering solutions from customer and project requirements.

·       Comprehend and implement client specifications in design and manufacturing.

·       Perform and document mechanical engineering calculations.

·       Select gearboxes based on application, duty, loads, and thermal ratings.

·       Select mechanical components including bearings, couplings, brakes.

·       Design and assess shafts, couplings, housings, drive bases and other custom mechanical components.

·       Utilise FEA for component optimisation and cost manufacturing reduction.

·       Produce detailed 3D models, general arrangements, assembly drawings and manufacturing drawings.

·       Apply appropriate engineering tolerances, fits and GD&T.

·       Review designs for strength, reliability, manufacturability and service life.

·       Investigate engineering and manufacturing problems and develop practical solutions.

·       Provide technical support to Sales, Projects and Production.

·       Conduct design reviews and drawing checking.

·       Participate in root cause analysis and technical investigations.

·       Improve existing products, designs and engineering processes.

·       Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.

·       Share and develop best practices in CAD modelling and drawing.

About you

You will be an experienced mechanical design engineer with strong practical engineering judgement and the ability to independently take a design from concept through to manufacture.

You will ideally have:

·       A Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification.

·       5–7+ years’ relevant mechanical engineering/design experience.

·       The ability to work independently and take ownership of engineering outcomes.

·       Strong mechanical design and engineering calculation skills.

·       Experience with power transmission equipment, rotating machinery, gearboxes, winches or similar industrial equipment, including electric motors and hydraulics.

·       Strong understanding of shafts, bearings, gears, couplings and mechanical components.

·       Experience producing detailed general arrangements and manufacturing drawings.

·       Good understanding of tolerances, fits and GD&T.

·       Strong design-for-manufacture knowledge.

·       Experience with professional 3D CAD and PLM systems; Siemens NX and Teamcenter experience is highly desirable.

·       Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

·       Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with Sales, Projects and Production.

·       An interest in mentoring and developing less experienced engineers.
