Job description
Job Description
Department: Engineering / MEP
Reports To: Engineering Manager / EOR
Location: Data Center Site
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineer โ Data Center is responsible for the design, coordination, execution, commissioning, and handover of mechanical systems supporting mission-critical data center facilities. This role owns the full engineering lifecycle โ from developing the Basis of Design (BoD) through Issued for Construction (IFC) documentation โ while coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activities across HVAC, hydronic, plumbing, drainage, and fire protection systems. The successful candidate will work closely with the Engineer of Record (EOR), construction teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure that mechanical infrastructure is designed, installed, tested, and commissioned to the highest standards of reliability, safety, and operational uptime required for critical facilities.
Key Responsibilities1. Mechanical & Electrical Design Development
-
Collaborate with internal engineering, architecture, and operations teams to develop, implement, and manage mechanical and electrical designs for data center projects, spanning new facility build-outs, infrastructure upgrades, and renovation works.
-
Lead the design process through all project phases โ Basis of Design (BoD), Schematic Design (SD), Design Development (DD), and Issued for Construction (IFC) โ ensuring alignment with client standards, industry codes, and data center best practices.
-
Ensure design deliverables reflect scalability, redundancy (N, N+1, 2N configurations), and energy-efficiency requirements specific to mission-critical environments.
2. Final Design Documentation
-
Develop and finalize comprehensive design documentation, including technical specifications, sequences of operation (SOO), and control narratives for all mechanical systems.
-
Prepare detailed layout drawings and design packages for HVAC systems (CRAH/CRAC units, in-row cooling, chilled water systems, air handling units), domestic water supply, sanitary and storm drainage, and fire protection/firefighting systems.
-
Review and validate calculations for cooling loads, airflow, pipe sizing, pump selection, and equipment capacity to ensure designs meet performance and redundancy requirements.
-
Coordinate the preparation of Bill of Quantities (BoQ), equipment schedules, and technical submittals in support of procurement and construction.
3. Site Engineering Support & RFI Management
-
Develop a detailed, working knowledge of ongoing mechanical project requirements at the site, including construction sequencing, equipment lead times, and site-specific constraints.
-
Respond to and manage Requests for Information (RFIs) in close coordination with the Engineer of Record (EOR), ensuring timely, technically sound, and code-compliant resolutions.
-
Maintain a log of RFIs, design clarifications, and site queries, tracking resolution status and communicating updates to relevant stakeholders.
4. Technology Insertion & Continuous Improvement
-
Participate in the evaluation and insertion of new technologies, equipment, and methodologies by collaborating with the core engineering team.
-
Provide site-specific requirements and constraints to inform the feasibility and applicability of new technologies within existing or planned infrastructure.
-
Support pilot implementations and knowledge transfer sessions when new systems or standards are introduced across projects.
5. Installation & Commissioning Oversight
-
Oversee the installation and commissioning of in-row cooling units, CRAH (Computer Room Air Handler), and CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioner) units, ensuring compliance with approved design intent.
-
Verify proper chilled water (CHW) supply and return connections, valve configurations, and insulation integrity to prevent leaks, condensation, and thermal loss.
-
Ensure correct installation of condensate and floor drainage systems to prevent water damage risk to critical IT infrastructure.
-
Conduct field inspections to confirm installation quality aligns with manufacturer guidelines, project specifications, and industry standards (e.g., ASHRAE, SMACNA, NFPA).
6. Site-Level MEP Issue Management
-
Own and manage all site-level Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) issues arising during project execution, driving root-cause analysis and corrective action.
-
Track open issues to closure, escalating unresolved items to the appropriate stakeholders and ensuring documentation of resolutions for lessons-learned purposes.
-
Proactively identify design or installation risks that could affect project schedule, cost, or system reliability.
7. Cross-Functional Coordination
-
Coordinate closely with electrical, civil, structural, fire protection, and IT infrastructure teams to ensure seamless, clash-free execution of data center projects.
-
Participate in multidisciplinary coordination meetings, clash detection reviews (e.g., BIM/Revit model coordination), and construction progress reviews.
-
Act as the primary mechanical point of contact for contractors, vendors, and subcontractors on-site.
8. Testing, Commissioning & Handover
-
Lead and support Testing & Commissioning (T&C) activities for all mechanical systems, including functional performance testing (FPT), integrated systems testing (IST), and factory/site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT).
-
Develop and review commissioning scripts, test procedures, and punch lists in coordination with the commissioning agent (CxA) and EOR.
-
Ensure all systems are validated for performance, redundancy, and failover scenarios prior to handover.
-
Lead the formal system handover process, ensuring complete turnover documentation, as-built drawings, O&M manuals, and warranty information are provided to the operations team.
Qualifications & RequirementsEducation
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline; a professional engineering license (PE/Chartered Engineer) is an advantage.
Experience
-
Minimum of 4โ8 years of experience in mechanical engineering design and/or site execution, with significant exposure to mission-critical or data center facilities.
-
Demonstrated experience with HVAC systems design, chilled water systems, precision cooling units (CRAH/CRAC/in-row), and fire protection systems.
-
Prior experience managing RFIs, coordinating with EORs, and supporting IFC documentation processes.
-
Hands-on experience with Testing, Commissioning, and Handover (T&C) of mechanical systems in a live construction environment.
Technical Skills
-
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit/BIM, and mechanical design/simulation software.
-
Strong understanding of relevant codes and standards, including ASHRAE, SMACNA, NFPA, and local building/mechanical codes.
-
Working knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS) and controls sequences of operation.
Soft Skills & Attributes
-
Strong cross-functional coordination and stakeholder management abilities.
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for RFI responses, technical documentation, and reporting.
-
Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple site issues simultaneously.
-
Ability to work on-site with flexibility to support project schedules, including during critical commissioning phases.
Key Competencies
