Mechanical Engineer

Hours: Monday – Friday | 40 hours (8am–5pm) + 1 in 4 week On-Call Rota (Pool Van available) + Overtime

Location: MOD Main Building, (Whitehall)

We’re recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our building maintenance team supporting the Ministry of Defence estate in Whitehall.

This is a hands-on facilities maintenance role, working as part of a dedicated engineering team and reporting directly to the Lead Mechanical Engineer.

You’ll be responsible for the planned and reactive maintenance of a wide range of mechanical building services across a complex government estate. The role will involve working with both modern and legacy mechanical systems, requiring a practical engineer who is confident fault-finding, carrying out repairs and ensuring plant and equipment remain safe, reliable and compliant. The role will provide exposure to a wide range of critical mechanical systems, including: HVAC and environmental systems, including AHUs, chillers and pressurisation systems, Heating and energy systems, Pumps, valves and associated mechanical plant, Water systems and associated infrastructure, Fuel storage and associated plant & Modern and legacy mechanical building services

Security Requirements

Candidates must be sole UK nationals and eligible for DV clearance. Candidates may be able to start following SC clearance, subject to the required security process. Until DV clearance is obtained, successful candidates will be appropriately restricted and shadowed on-site.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) across mechanical plant and building services

• Respond to reactive maintenance requirements and breakdowns

• Carry out fault-finding, diagnostics, repairs and adjustments on mechanical systems

• Maintain HVAC, heating, pumps, valves, pipework and associated plant

• Support the maintenance and operation of water systems

• Identify issues with ageing and legacy mechanical equipment and recommend appropriate remedial action

• Assist the Lead Mechanical Engineer with technical works, projects and improvement programmes

• Work safely in accordance with statutory requirements, site procedures and safe systems of work

• Complete maintenance records, reports and compliance documentation accurately

• Liaise with specialist contractors and service providers when required

What We’re Looking For

• Proven experience in mechanical building services or facilities maintenance

• Strong hands-on mechanical engineering skills

• Experience with HVAC, heating, pumps, valves and pipework

• Good fault-finding and problem-solving ability

• Experience working with both modern and legacy mechanical plant

• A good understanding of statutory compliance and safe systems of work

• Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a wider engineering team

• Strong communication and reporting skills
