Job description

Department: Mental Health and Addictions, Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Recovery & Dual Diagnosis

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

  • Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario required

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months)

  • Current Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) Certificate required

  • Graduate of a recognized BScN Program required

  • Master of Nursing/Master of Science in Nursing is required

  • Certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse, Canada (CPMHNC) an asset

  • A minimum of 5 years recent and relevant psychiatric nursing experience required

  • Strong understanding of treatment modalities related to concurrent disorders and withdrawal management requirement

  • Knowledge of recovery-oriented practices required

  • Knowledge and experience teaching principles of mental health recovery and interventions required

  • Good working knowledge of the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice required

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent demonstrated physical, psychiatric and psychosocial assessment and intervention skills required

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present educational material based on the principles of adult education required

  • Demonstrated knowledge of pertinent legislation such as the Mental Health Act required

  • Demonstrated ability to apply the principles of recovery and trauma informed care

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate educational curricula and training sessions

  • Current knowledge of psychotropic medications and symptom management required

  • Comprehensive experience in crisis intervention, de-escalation, and management of challenging behaviours required

  • Experience in Policy and Procedure development required

  • Self-directed professional who functions with minimal supervision required

  • Excellent demonstrated flexibility, organizational and leadership skills required

  • Experience working with inter-professional collaborative teams, committees and community stakeholders required

  • Ability to participate in professional groups dedicated to excellence in nursing practice with the patient populations served

  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge and expertise for the population groups served by these Lodges severe and persistent Mental Illness and experience working with Psychiatric Rehabilitation & Recovery Programs are assets

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the forensic mental health system, legislation, and risk management practices an asset

  • Knowledge of quality improvement concepts and methods an asset

  • Experience with both inpatients and outpatients is an asset

  • Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity with best practice in patient populations served (i.e., schizophrenia, mood and anxiety disorders, psychosis) is an asset

  • Demonstrated team player required

  • Excellent demonstrated interpersonal, communications and reporting skills (verbal and written) required

  • Critical problem solving and decision-making skills required

  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing education required

  • Computer skills-keyboarding and software applications required

  • Strong commitment to recovery principles and patient care

  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors

  • Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization

  • Good attendance and work record required

  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is an asset. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
