Job description
Opto-Mechanical Engineer
Role Purpose
Design and develop precision opto-mechanical systems, components and assemblies that maintain optical performance under structural, thermal, vibration and environmental loads.
Key Responsibilities
-
Use three-dimensional computer-aided design (3D CAD) software to develop opto-mechanical concepts for new systems.
-
Design, analyse, document and support testing of robust precision components, lens assemblies and mechanical systems.
-
Perform tolerance, thermal, structural, vibration and optical analyses using appropriate engineering tools.
-
Assess how mechanical loads and environmental conditions affect system and component performance.
-
Use CAD, optical modelling and finite element analysis (FEA) software to design and validate components and assemblies.
-
Participate in design reviews and improve existing products through problem-solving, product development and production support.
-
Troubleshoot technical issues and conduct root-cause analysis using engineering and physics principles.
-
Develop processes that preserve design intent, support repeatable production and improve manufacturability.
-
Prepare technical data packs and supporting design documentation for optical components and systems.
-
Provide technical oversight and delegate engineering tasks when appropriate.
Required Experience and Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Opto-mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
-
Minimum three years of experience in opto-mechanical system design and development.
-
A master’s degree is advantageous.
Technical Skills
-
Optomechanical system, precision mechanism and lens-assembly design.
-
Proficiency with CAD and engineering simulation tools such as SolidWorks and ANSYS.
-
Structural, mechanical, thermal and vibration design, analysis and testing.
-
Mechanical-system design and electronics packaging.
-
Knowledge of material properties, fabrication methods and design for manufacturability.
-
Familiarity with electro-optical laboratory equipment, including autocollimators and vibration shakers.
-
Experience with optical modelling software such as Zemax is advantageous.
Core Competencies
-
Proactive and analytical approach to engineering problems.
-
Self-motivated, practical and delivery focused.
-
Collaborative team player with clear technical communication.
-
Strong ownership, attention to detail and sound engineering judgment.
