Why now

Education is entering a major shift, and Breakout Learning is building for what comes next.

We’re creating an AI-native platform for active learning in higher education: content designed to spark real discussion, small-group experiences where AI helps moderate and assess participation, and instructor tools that show how students are thinking, where they’re struggling, and what needs attention.

We’re building toward a broader platform that brings together discussion, assessment, authoring, instructor workflows, integrations, and the infrastructure institutions need to use AI in teaching and learning.

Breakout was founded by Ramit Varma, also founder of Revolution Prep, Steven Walters, and Joshua Oster-Morris, and is being built alongside educators and academic leaders from institutions including UCLA Anderson and Vanderbilt. We’re already SOC 2, FERPA, WCAG 2.2, and NIST AI RMF certified and gaining commercial traction.

We’re early enough that a great Product Manager can have real influence over the roadmap, the product, and how Product and Engineering work together as we grow.

You’ll work directly with professors, institutions, partners, customer-facing teams, engineers, and company leadership. You’ll turn customer insight, company direction, and technical constraints into clear product decisions and shipped experiences.

What you’ll doDiscover and define the right problems

  • Run discovery through customer interviews, feedback sessions, workflow reviews, and direct collaboration with internal teams

  • Separate the underlying customer problem from the requested feature and turn conflicting input into a clear recommendation

  • Frame opportunities around the user, problem, evidence, desired outcome, scope, dependencies, tradeoffs, and open questions

  • Determine the smallest valuable version of a solution and recommend what should move forward, wait, or be solved another way

Turn product decisions into shipped work

  • Write requirements and specs that give engineering clear context on the problem, intended behavior, workflows, edge cases, and acceptance criteria

  • Think through complete workflows across instructors, students, administrators, LMSs, partners, and internal teams where relevant

  • Identify implications across permissions, integrations, billing, entitlements, configuration, data flows, and platform architecture

  • Partner closely with engineering during implementation to answer questions and make product decisions quickly

  • Stay involved through release and validate completed work against the intended experience

Own your area and work well across the company

  • Know what’s in progress, what’s blocked, what decisions are outstanding, and where risks are emerging

  • Raise risks early, close loops, and keep commitments visible

  • Work with Product and Engineering leadership to sequence work and make tradeoffs clear

  • Build strong relationships with customer-facing teams so product questions and customer signals move quickly through the company

  • Work directly with engineers, design, customers, partners, and leadership as a credible product partner

What we’re looking for

Must-have

  • 4+ years of product management experience, or equivalent experience owning discovery, requirements, prioritization, and shipped software outcomes

  • A track record of taking ambiguous problems from customer signal through product definition and release

  • Strong product judgment and the ability to distinguish a customer signal from a feature request

  • Strong discovery skills and the ability to uncover the real problem behind what someone initially asks for

  • A track record of writing requirements and specs engineering teams can build from with minimal ambiguity

  • Strong product sense and UX judgment across workflows, states, edge cases, and user behavior

  • Technical fluency across modern software systems, APIs, integrations, data flows, and implementation tradeoffs

  • Strong written communication and the ability to frame problems, decisions, and requirements clearly

  • Comfortable pushing back respectfully when the evidence or tradeoffs call for it

  • High ownership and follow-through

  • Fluency using AI in your own work across research, analysis, writing, prototyping, data exploration, and requirements development

Strongly preferred

  • Startup or high-growth company experience

  • Experience with complex B2B or B2B2C software

  • Experience with enterprise customers and multi-stakeholder environments

  • EdTech, higher education, LMS, institutional workflow, billing, entitlement, permissions, configuration, or platform experience

  • Experience working on AI-powered products

EdTech experience is valuable, though we care more about strong product craft, judgment, and learning speed than a specific industry background.

Why this role

You’ll work directly with customers and founders and have real influence over what gets built, how it gets built, and how the product organization works as the company grows.

You’ll also be working on a hard and interesting product problem: helping define what teaching, learning, assessment, and instructor workflows should look like when AI is part of the classroom experience.

There’s a lot of room here for someone who wants ownership, cares about product quality, enjoys complex systems, and wants to help build both the product and the product organization around it.

Benefits & Equity

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance

  • Unlimited PTO, with the expectation that people take real time off

  • A company-wide holiday schedule with built-in time to recharge throughout the year

  • Stock options with a four-year vesting schedule and one-year cliff
