Project Manager, Asbestos Policy

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Project Manager, Asbestos Policy who will support NSW councils to improve the management and regulation of asbestos within their local government areas. You will be responsible in leading policy initiatives, stakeholder engagement and capacity-building activities that help councils manage asbestos safely and effectively.

About the role

Reporting to the Strategy Manager Environment, the Project Manager, Asbestos Policy will play an integral role in representing and supporting local government on asbestos management matters. The position is funded by the NSW Environment Protection Authority through to 30 June 2027.

The role involves:

• Working with the NSW Asbestos Coordination Committee to support a coordinated response to asbestos matters across NSW.

• Leading or supporting activities under the NSW Asbestos Delivery Plan 2024–30.

• Representing the views and needs of local government to the NSW Government and other stakeholders.

• Developing policy papers, workshops and resources to help councils manage asbestos safely.

• Supporting councils to adopt and implement the Model Asbestos Policy for NSW Councils.

• Consulting with councils and providing advice in response to emerging asbestos issues.

• Building effective working relationships with councils, government agencies, industry groups and other stakeholders.

About you

You will have demonstrated experience in policy development, advocacy and stakeholder consultation, with an understanding of local government and the roles of different levels of government in managing asbestos. You are a confident communicator who can develop effective relationships with councils, government agencies and industry stakeholders. Your strengths will include policy analysis, project delivery, facilitation, consultation and capacity building.

Selection Criteria

• Demonstrated experience in and/or understanding of local government.

• Demonstrated ability to understand the role of all levels of government in managing asbestos.

• Demonstrated high-level written and verbal communication skills.

• Excellent skills and experience in advocacy, consultation, facilitation and capacity-building projects.

• Demonstrated experience in policy formulation and advice.

• Knowledge of relevant legislation and government policies relating to asbestos management.

• Relevant tertiary qualifications.
