About the job

This role is being recruited by CoffeeSpace on behalf of an anonymous company developing autonomous field robots for utility-scale solar infrastructure.

About the company

This company is pioneering the development of the world's first off-grid power plant for data centers using renewable technologies and autonomous robotics. They manufacture and deploy robots that drive rebar foundations into the ground at utility-scale solar sites, addressing the 3-5 year power wait time for data centers.

Founded by operators with a track record of scaling a company to 80+ people and $350M in annual sales, the team is currently 10 people strong. They are working directly with one of the largest compute providers and plan to deploy 5GW by 2028.

About the role

You will own the mechanical architecture of an autonomous field robot, taking it from concept through prototype to production. This hands-on role involves designing, building, breaking, and rebuilding in the field. You'll work closely with a small, high-agency team, with founding-team-level ownership.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the full mechanical architecture of the robot, including chassis, mast, tool head, rebar handling, feed system, drivetrain, and locomotion for rough terrain.

  • Design, prototype, and iterate rapidly — machining parts, collaborating with fab shops, and testing hardware in the field.

  • Specify and integrate actuators, sensors, and power distribution with the electrical/mechatronics engineer.

  • Perform structural and dynamic analysis, including reaction loads, vibration, fatigue, and tip-over stability.

  • Transition designs from prototype to a small production fleet, focusing on DFM, reliability, and field serviceability.

The Ideal Candidate

  • 7+ years of experience in mechanical engineering roles, particularly in robotics or similar fields.

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, CAD, FEA, GD&T, and experience with hydraulics, electric actuators, motor sizing & selection, and rapid prototyping.

  • Experience in designing for manufacturability and field serviceability.

  • Thrives in fast-paced environments and is comfortable working in austere conditions.
