Salary Range: $52,000 - $62,000 per year
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Position Summary
An international law firm is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join its San Juan, Puerto Rico office. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Senior Accountant will be responsible for supporting the Firm’s accounting operations and ensuring the accurate and timely completion of the full accounting cycle across multiple law firm and related entities.
This position is responsible for a broad range of accounting and financial functions, including general ledger activities, accounts payable, bank and trust account reconciliations, settlement administration, financial reporting, tax compliance, lender reporting, covenant compliance, intercompany allocations, and related financial processes.
The ideal candidate will have strong accounting knowledge, analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance with applicable accounting standards, legal industry requirements, and Firm policies.
Key Responsibilities
Full Accounting Cycle

Manage and support all aspects of the full accounting cycle, including general ledger activity, journal entries, account reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting support.

Ensure financial transactions are recorded accurately, completely, and timely across multiple entities and cost centers.

Prepare and review monthly general ledger and balance sheet account reconciliations.

Maintain supporting schedules and investigate and resolve account discrepancies and reconciling items.

Review accounting transactions for accuracy, proper classification, allocation, and completeness.

Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.

Maintain accurate and organized accounting records in accordance with established accounting procedures and Firm policies.
Accounts Payable & Related Accounting Functions
-
Perform and support accounts payable functions, including invoice review, coding, approvals, payment processing, and recordkeeping.

Ensure vendor payments are processed accurately and within established deadlines.

Investigate and resolve vendor discrepancies.
-
Maintain organized accounts payable documentation and supporting records.
-
Monitor expenses and ensure proper allocation across entities, departments, and cost centers.

Assist with accounts receivable and other accounting functions, as applicable.
Bank & Trust Account Reconciliations
-
Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and investigate and resolve reconciling items in a timely manner.

Perform reconciliations related to operating accounts and client trust/IOLTA accounts.

Support compliance with applicable client trust accounting requirements and Firm procedures.
-
Maintain appropriate supporting documentation for bank, trust, and related account reconciliations.
-
Identify unusual transactions, discrepancies, or reconciliation issues and escalate matters as appropriate.
Settlement Administration
-
Assist with the financial administration, accounting, and tracking of legal settlements.

Review and reconcile settlement disbursements, escrow activity, and related financial transactions.

Coordinate with attorneys, case managers, operations personnel, and other appropriate stakeholders to ensure the accurate allocation, documentation, and recording of settlement funds.

Maintain detailed accounting records and supporting documentation related to settlement activity.
-
Support compliance with client trust accounting requirements and internal controls related to settlement funds.
-
Assist in preparing settlement-related financial reports, schedules, and reconciliations.
-
Identify and investigate discrepancies related to settlement activity and assist with appropriate corrective actions.
Financial Reporting & Month-End Close

Prepare monthly financial reports, management reports, schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.

Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements.
-
Support month-end and year-end closing processes.
-
Prepare variance analyses, account explanations, and supporting financial information for management review.
-
Assist the CFO with financial reporting, financial analysis, and other accounting-related matters.
-
Support budgeting activities and financial data analysis, as needed.
-
Ensure assigned accounting responsibilities and reporting requirements are completed accurately and within established deadlines.
Tax Compliance
-
Support monthly tax compliance requirements and related filings.
-
Assist with tax preparation, reporting, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.

Maintain records required to support applicable tax filings and compliance requirements.

Coordinate the preparation of accounting information requested by external tax professionals, as applicable.
Lender Reporting & Covenant Compliance
-
Assist with the preparation and calculation of financial covenant ratios and related supporting documentation.

Maintain quarterly work-in-progress (WIP) schedules in coordination with appropriate case management and operational personnel.

Assemble financial information, schedules, and supporting documentation required for quarterly and annual lender reporting packages.
-
Assist with the preparation and delivery of lender reporting requirements within established deadlines.
-
Support activities related to the Firm’s cash concentration account and related reconciliations.
-
Assist with insurance certificate management and applicable lender endorsement requirements.
-
Identify and communicate transactions, financial conditions, or other events that may impact applicable lender covenants.

Maintain appropriate supporting documentation related to lender reporting and covenant compliance.
Multiple Entities & Intercompany Accounting
-
Support accounting activities involving multiple law firm and related entities.
-
Prepare, review, and reconcile intercompany transactions and allocations.
-
Ensure expenses, revenues, and other financial transactions are appropriately allocated among entities, departments, and cost centers.

Support appropriate financial and operational separateness among the Firm, Legal MSO, and related entities.

Investigate and resolve intercompany discrepancies.
-
Maintain supporting schedules and documentation for intercompany balances and transactions.
Compliance & Internal Controls
-
Maintain compliance with established accounting policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and applicable legal industry financial requirements.

Assist in maintaining and improving accounting procedures, documentation, and internal controls.
-
Support internal and external audits by preparing reports, reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documentation.

Assist with compliance reporting and information requests.
-
Ensure confidentiality, security, and accuracy of sensitive financial and client-related information.

Identify accounting or control issues and assist with the development and implementation of appropriate corrective actions.

Perform other accounting and finance-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.

Minimum of five (5) years of relevant accounting experience.

Fluency in English, both written and verbal, required.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with strong Microsoft Excel skills.

Strong working knowledge of the full accounting cycle and general ledger accounting.

Experience with account reconciliations, financial reporting, and tax compliance.
-
Experience working with accounts payable and bank reconciliations.
-
Ability to work with complex accounting transactions across multiple entities and cost centers.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with legal industry accounting functions preferred.

Experience with client trust/IOLTA account reconciliations preferred.

Experience with settlement administration, settlement disbursements, or escrow accounting preferred.

Experience with lender reporting, financial covenant compliance, or covenant calculations preferred.
