Senior Accountant – Multi-Entity Operations

Location: Afton, VA

Job Type: Full-time

Reports To: Ownership / Leadership Team

About Hazy Mountain

Hazy Mountain Vineyards & Brewery is a growing hospitality and wine destination in Afton, Virginia, with operations that extend beyond the vineyard itself. Our business includes hospitality, food and beverage, events, lodging, and other related operations, creating a fast-moving environment with multiple business entities and revenue streams.

We are looking for a Senior Accountant – Multi-Entity Operations to take ownership of the day-to-day accounting function and help leadership understand the financial performance of the organization.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys working independently, solving problems, improving processes, and having direct visibility with company leadership. The ideal candidate is comfortable moving between detailed accounting work and higher-level financial analysis.

The Opportunity

The Senior Accountant will oversee accounting activities across multiple Hazy Mountain entities and will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial information from transaction entry through financial reporting.

This position will have significant involvement in the monthly close, reconciliations, payroll accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow analysis, and coordination with outside accounting and tax professionals.

Rather than focusing on one narrow area of accounting, this role provides exposure to the full financial picture of a growing, multi-business organization.

What You'll Do

Accounting Operations

  • Manage day-to-day accounting activity for multiple company entities and business units.

  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger activity, and payroll-related accounting entries.

  • Review transactions for proper classification, documentation, and accuracy.

  • Maintain organized and reliable financial records across the organization.

  • Maintain fixed asset schedules and related depreciation records.

  • Identify discrepancies or unusual transactions and research them through resolution.

Month-End & Financial Close

  • Lead the monthly accounting close process for assigned entities.

  • Perform recurring bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations.

  • Review account balances and investigate variances or inconsistencies.

  • Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.

  • Maintain accurate financial records throughout the year to ensure a smooth year-end close.

  • Establish and maintain procedures that improve the consistency and efficiency of the close process.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare financial reports for ownership and leadership.

  • Monitor financial performance against budgets and expectations.

  • Analyze revenue, expenses, operating costs, and margins to identify trends and opportunities.

  • Provide leadership with clear explanations of financial results rather than simply presenting numbers.

  • Assist with cash flow projections and short- and long-term financial planning.

  • Help identify opportunities to improve profitability, control costs, and strengthen financial processes.

Budgeting & Planning

  • Assist leadership with annual budgeting and ongoing financial forecasting.

  • Track actual results against budget and investigate significant variances.

  • Help develop financial projections for different business units and entities.

  • Provide financial information and analysis to support operational and strategic decisions.

Tax, Compliance & Outside Partners

  • Maintain accounting practices that support compliance with applicable financial and tax requirements.

  • Work directly with external CPAs, tax preparers, auditors, and other financial professionals as needed.

  • Prepare schedules, documentation, and financial information required for tax filings, reviews, and audits.

  • Help maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • At least 3 years of professional accounting or bookkeeping experience.

  • Experience handling accounting responsibilities across multiple entities or business units is strongly preferred.

  • Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks or Xero.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and the ability to work comfortably with financial data.

  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, financial statements, and month-end close.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and a high standard for financial accuracy.

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize competing deadlines, and take ownership of responsibilities.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain financial information to leaders who may not have an accounting background.

  • Comfortable working in an environment where responsibilities and priorities can evolve as the business grows.

Additional Experience That Would Be Valuable

  • Multi-entity accounting and financial reporting.

  • Experience supporting hospitality, food & beverage, events, winery, restaurant, or other service-oriented businesses.

  • CPA license or progress toward CPA certification.

  • Budget preparation and variance analysis.

  • Cash flow forecasting.

  • Experience developing or improving accounting procedures and internal controls.

  • Experience working directly with business owners or executive leadership.

Why Hazy Mountain?

This isn't a role where you'll be responsible for one small piece of the accounting process and hand everything else off.

You'll have the opportunity to see how the financial pieces of a diverse business fit together and work directly with ownership and leadership. Your analysis will help influence decisions around operations, budgeting, spending, growth, and profitability.

You'll also have the opportunity to improve the accounting infrastructure as the organization continues to expand.

If you're someone who likes ownership, variety, autonomy, and being trusted with the numbers, this position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
