Job description

Description

At simpleclub, we’re on a mission to shape the future of learning for millions of students. As part of this mission, we’re undertaking an ambitious and rewarding project: migrating our custom CMS (built on Firestore and trigger-based pipelines) to a modern, API-first headless CMS.

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our team focused on training material and learning experience, further developing a core domain responsible for delivering and managing all our app content. We’ve got tricky and impactful projects lined up: you’ll be laying the foundation for future-proof, AI ready API-driven content delivery.

Upcoming projects

  • Simulations: integrate internally produced 3D simulations and mini-apps deeply with our core app features (progress, learning plans, tests)

  • Permissions: with more and larger customers, we want to deeply integrate our SpiceDB backend permission system

  • Unified CMS: producing content in-house compared to our content creator available for customers is deviating, and we want everyone to benefit from the work going into it

  • Integrations: allow different education providers to sync and benefit from the simpleclub platform via connections like SCORM/LTI

How will you make an impact:

  • Own backend features for AI-powered educator tools: architecture, implementation, deployment, observability. The whole lifecycle is yours.

  • Lead technical designs and ADRs for new and refactoring projects, ensuring stable, secure and fast time to customer value

  • Integrate further, experiment with and continually improve how we work with AI (create and manage skills, loops and context files), in the context of the above projects.

  • Use agentic coding tools to refine, plan, first draft and monitor as part of your daily workflow.

  • Ship features with Flutter engineers, PM, and designer. Short cycles, tight feedback loops.

What we value:

  • 7+ years of backend development on production systems. You've owned services, debugged incidents at scale, mentored engineers, and made architecture decisions you had to live with.

  • Experience in product trios or similar setups where engineers shape the product, not just build what's specced.

  • You use AI coding tools daily. Show us your workflow, skills, context management and agent orchestration, and how you leverage them responsibly.

  • Strong experience with NoSQL (Firestore) and relational databases (PostgreSQL/Spanner) especially schema migration and transformation tasks.

  • Understanding of API design, caching, and high-performance content delivery.

  • Clear, async-first communication. You write well, share context without being asked, and document decisions. We're a remote-first, multinational team. English is the working language.

  • Comfortable with asynchronous, event-driven systems (e.g., via Pub/Sub or webhooks).

How you'll get started quickly

  • Team culture: we support and give feedback to each other. We’ll ensure you’re onboarded properly and have everything you need.

  • High autonomy: You’ll be trusted to own your technical solutions while being supported by an experienced engineering lead.

  • Remote-first culture: We’re async-friendly, collaborative, and focused on deep work without constant meetings.

Tech Stack You’ll Work With: Node.js, TypeScript, Claude, Terraform, GCP (Firestore, Spanner)

What is in for you:

  • Unlimited paid holidays

  • Work from anywhere

  • Team events

  • A great culture

  • Perk Budget

  • Join a purposeful mission

Your salary: We transparency. We have different levels within our salary bands, and we use these levels to determine a fair salary for each range. Your salary is reviewed at least once a year.

The salary band for this role in Germany is: 70.000 - 94.600 EUR annually gross. If you live outside of Germany, we will adapt to your local market.

We have implemented salary bands in all job descriptions to ensure we treat all employees fairly. Once we get to know each other better and understand your skills and experience during the interview process, we will be able to evaluate where you would fit within the salary band.
