Senior Data Engineer
American Corporation for Public Well Being
Job description
Security & Compliance Senior Full-Time, Senior Individual Contributor
About The Role
The Senior Data Engineer will be a key contributor to ACPWB's Security & Compliance practice, working on data engineering and pipeline development that directly supports our compensation advisory work. If you have experience with Node.js and PostgreSQL and are looking for a role where your engineering output has clear business impact rather than disappearing into a backlog, ACPWB is worth your attention.
The Senior Data Engineer will join ACPWB's Security & Compliance group and own a defined portion of the employee data warehouse. The work spans Node.js and PostgreSQL on on-premise infrastructure and hybrid cloud, balancing feature development with the maintenance and reliability that a professional services firm depends on. We treat engineering as a professional discipline here โ not a cost center. That distinction affects how this team operates day to day.
Key Responsibilities
-
โ Ensure reliability, performance, and security of data engineering and pipeline development infrastructure on on-premise infrastructure and hybrid cloud
-
โ Participate in sprint planning, standups, and retrospectives as part of the Security & Compliance engineering cadence
-
โ Conduct performance analysis and capacity planning for the employee data warehouse to support firm growth
-
โ Monitor system health, troubleshoot issues, and respond to incidents with appropriate urgency and documentation
-
โ Evaluate and recommend tools, platforms, and architectural approaches for data engineering and pipeline development initiatives
Qualifications
Required
-
โ Experience with version control (Git), code review practices, and CI/CD pipelines
-
โ Experience with ETL or data pipeline development and maintenance
-
โ Experience working in an Agile or iterative development environment
-
โ Understanding of networking fundamentals including DNS, TCP/IP, firewalls, and VPN
-
โ Experience building and operating systems on on-premise infrastructure and hybrid cloud in a professional environment
-
โ Experience with monitoring, alerting, and observability tooling for production systems
Preferred
-
โ Experience with data orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow, Prefect, or equivalent
-
โ Experience with compensation analytics, HR technology, or financial services data platforms
-
โ Experience with feature flagging, A/B testing infrastructure, or progressive deployment patterns
WHY ACPWB
We have turned down clients whose values are not aligned with ours. We have published research that made clients uncomfortable. We have declined to revise our conclusions when asked to. We mention this because it is who we are, and we would rather hire people who find it attractive.
ACPWB was founded in Milwaukee in 2006 with a simple mandate: help working Americans understand and advocate for the compensation they deserve. Eighteen years later, that mandate has grown into a full-service research and advisory practice serving clients from early-stage employers to Fortune 50 enterprises โ and we are still based in Milwaukee, because Milwaukee is genuinely underrated.
INTERVIEW PROCESS
Finalists are invited to a two-hour working session with the team โ a structured discussion of a real analytical scenario relevant to the role. There is no single correct answer. The session is a preview of what collaboration looks like at ACPWB. Candidates consistently find it useful regardless of outcome.
What Success Looks Like In Year One
-
โ Demonstrate the ability to scope technical work accurately and deliver against that scope
-
โ Complete a successful deployment to production with no unplanned rollbacks or escalations
-
โ Reduce at least one identified pain point for the analytical team through tooling or infrastructure improvement
-
โ Support at least one cross-functional project where your technical work enables an advisory deliverable
