Position Description

The Senior Data Sleuth Accounting Analyst is responsible for transforming large volumes of financial records into investigation-ready financial intelligence. This role is ideal for an experienced accounting professional, bookkeeper, or accounting services professional who enjoys working with data, solving complex financial problems, and uncovering meaningful insights from financial records.

Unlike traditional public accounting roles, this position focuses less on compliance and financial statement preparation and more on the analysis, organization, and interpretation of historical financial information used in investigations, litigation matters, divorce proceedings, trust and estate disputes, fraud examinations, and other financial conflicts.

The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of accounting systems and general ledger activity, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to communicate analytical findings clearly and objectively in written reports.

What You'll Do

Financial Data Processing & Preparation

• Process and organize financial data from multiple sources, including:

• Bank statements

• Credit card statements

• General ledger exports

• Accounting system reports

• Payroll records

• Financial statements

• Normalize and standardize financial data for analysis.

• Join and reconcile financial information across multiple accounts, financial institutions, and accounting systems.

• Validate data completeness and identify inconsistencies, missing information, or unusual activity requiring further review.

Accounting & Financial Analysis

• Analyze historical accounting records and general ledger activity.

• Investigate relationships between transactions, balances, and financial statement changes.

• Compare accounting records to underlying bank and credit card activity.

• Perform reconciliations, comparative analyses, and other analytical procedures.

• Assist in identifying patterns, anomalies, potential misclassifications or misappropriation, and unexplained financial activity.

• Trace the flow of funds between accounts, entities, and individuals.

Litigation & Investigation Support

Support engagements involving:

• Fraud investigations

• Financial misconduct allegations

• Divorce matters

• Trust and estate disputes

• Partnership and shareholder disputes

• Business interruption and damages matters

• Other financial investigative engagements

• Assist senior forensic accounting professionals in developing analyses relevant to case objectives.

• Organize findings and supporting documentation for client deliverables.

Report Writing & Findings Development

• Draft clear, concise, and objective written findings.

• Prepare schedules, exhibits, and supporting demonstratives.

• Communicate analytical results in a manner understandable to attorneys, judges, juries business owners, fiduciaries, and other non-accountants.

• Ensure all findings are supported by sufficient documentation and analysis.

• Maintain a neutral and fact-based reporting approach.

Required Qualifications

Minimum 5 years of experience in:

• Bookkeeping,

• Client accounting services,

• Financial reporting,

• Accounting management, or

• Similar accounting-related roles.

Strong understanding of:

• General ledger systems

• Financial statements

• Bank reconciliations

• Journal entries

• Accounts payable and receivable processes

• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

• Experience working with large financial datasets.

• Strong written communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to identify errors, inconsistencies, and unusual transactions in financial records.

• Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.

• Bachelor's degree.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

• Experience supporting litigation, investigations, fraud examinations, or dispute matters.

• Experience with QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, or similar accounting systems.

• Experience using Power Query, Power BI, IDEA, ACL, or other analytical tools.

• Experience preparing reports for attorneys, business owners, trustees, receivers, or other professional audiences.

CPA designation is not required. Expert witness testimony is not expected in this role. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesSuccessful candidates will demonstrate:
