American Federation for Children

Job description

About the Role

The American Federation for Children is the nation’s leading school choice advocacy organization, working to ensure that every child - regardless of zip code or family income - has access to the education that is right for them. Through the AFC Scholarship Fund, we are building the national infrastructure for the Education Freedom Tax Credit, a landmark program that puts that mission into action by empowering families to choose the schools and learning environments where their children can thrive.

The Sr. Full-Stack + DevOps Engineer is the technical backbone of that mission. You will report directly to the Senior Director, Digital Platforms & User Experience and execute data and MarTech strategy set by the Head of Data & MarTech. This is not a role with clean boundaries - you will move fluidly across internal platform engineering, data infrastructure, MarTech systems, and product integrations as the work demands. The expectation is that you bring initiative, systems-level thinking, and a bias toward building things that last.

This is a 0 to 1 environment. Much of the infrastructure exists and is actively in use, but there is significant work ahead - connecting systems, building new capabilities, improving what’s already running, and finding better ways to operate internally. We’re looking for someone who sees that as an opportunity, not ambiguity. You will be expected to identify problems before they’re assigned to you, propose solutions, and move quickly without sacrificing quality. AI-assisted development is not a bonus here - it is how we expect this role to operate.

What You’ll Own

Internal Platform Engineering

You will own the engineering of internal platforms that connect AFC’s operational infrastructure - building and maintaining the systems that tie our platforms together, improving how data moves across tools and teams, and developing new capabilities that increase productivity and organizational effectiveness. Current and near-term work in this space includes:

  • Building and maintaining current platforms including custom APIs, partner UUID infrastructure, and other builds.

  • Contributing to the AFC Partner Portal - a Next.js / TypeScript / Convex application hosted on Vercel, with Clerk for authentication, Sentry for monitoring, and Fundraise Up for donation processing. The portal is in active development and you will be expected to build on and improve it.

  • Designing and building custom integrations - including LLM-powered tools, internal chatbots, and AI-assisted workflows - that improve how the team operates and how our platforms communicate.

  • Building and maintaining new data pipelines and API integrations as the platform evolves and new systems come online.

  • Ensuring platform reliability, performance, and scalability across all environments - dev, staging, and production.

  • Establishing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and monitoring infrastructure that supports fast, safe releases.

MarTech & Data Platform Engineering

AFC’s MarTech stack - Segment, Snowflake, HubSpot, and Iterable - is live and operational. Your role is to maintain, extend, and improve the systems that depend on it, executing strategy defined by the Head of Data & MarTech. This includes:

  • Building and maintaining Snowflake data pipelines, dbt models, and ELT jobs.

  • Extending and improving Segment configuration, event taxonomies, and Reverse ETL audience syncs as new use cases emerge.

  • Maintaining and building upon HubSpot and Iterable integrations - sync configuration, behavioral triggers, and CRM lifecycle logic.

  • Implementing and maintaining server-side event infrastructure - including Fundraise Up event tracking and paid media attribution (Meta CAPI, Google Ads Enhanced Conversions).

  • Implementing data quality monitoring and alerting, and flagging issues early before they affect downstream systems.

WordPress & WP Engine - As Needed

Our WordPress platform is live and actively serving donors. This is not a primary ownership area for this role, but you will be expected to assist when engineering support is needed - including plugin development, performance work, and integration support as the platform continues to evolve.

2027 Platform Foundation

The work you do in 2026 will directly shape what AFC builds next. As the platform matures, AFC will build out proprietary infrastructure - and the engineer in this role will have meaningful influence over what that looks like.

  • Write clean, maintainable code that creates no architectural debt going into the next platform build.

  • Help establish AI-driven development practices as a core engineering standard for the team.

  • Contribute perspective on system design and integration architecture as planning for the next phase evolves.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for a senior engineer who is as comfortable architecting a system as they are writing the code to build it. The right candidate brings technical depth across the full stack, a strong instinct for how systems connect, and the initiative to improve things without being asked.

Engineering & Infrastructure

  • 6–8+ years of full-stack engineering experience with demonstrated ownership of both front-end and back-end systems.

  • Proficiency in React and Next.js - the Partner Portal is built on this stack and you will be expected to contribute to it.

  • Strong TypeScript skills and comfort working in a modern, type-checked codebase.

  • Hands-on AWS experience - we use AWS heavily across our infrastructure and this is a core requirement.

  • CI/CD pipeline experience: GitHub Actions, environment management, deployment tooling, and infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, Docker).

  • Strong API integration experience - authentication, pagination, rate limits, retries, error handling, and logging.

  • Experience with server-side event implementation: webhooks, server-side tagging, or equivalent.

  • Demonstrated ability to own technical QA - building checklists, catching integration failures, and enforcing standards.

Data & MarTech Stack

  • Hands-on experience with Segment or a comparable CDP - event taxonomy design, configuration, and Reverse ETL.

  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with Snowflake or a comparable cloud data warehouse.

  • Experience building and maintaining data pipelines (ETL/ELT) and working with dbt or comparable transformation frameworks.

  • Familiarity with HubSpot and Iterable - integration builds, sync configuration, and lifecycle trigger logic.

  • Experience with paid media attribution infrastructure: Meta CAPI, Google Ads Enhanced Conversions, UTM architecture.

Mindset & Ways of Working

  • Fluency using AI tools as a development accelerator - you architect and direct; AI executes. This is how you already work, not something you’re learning.

  • Self-starter with a strong bias toward action - you identify problems, propose solutions, and move without waiting to be asked.

  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving, zero-to-one environment where priorities shift and the work is not always fully defined.

  • Ability to work across technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating between business needs and engineering decisions.
