Job description

Build Software That Matters—From a 400-Acre Horse Ranch

Senior Full-Stack Software Developer | AI-First

Gainesville, Texas Full-Time Hybrid Premium Housing Available

Tired of corporate red tape, endless meetings, and jumping through hoops to get a good idea into production?

Picture spending your on-site workdays at a beautiful, 400-acre ranch, working directly with an involved founder in the equine business. You can talk through an idea, see the operation it supports, and build something that makes someone’s day easier.

If you’re looking for a change of pace and environment—with meaningful technical challenges and room to take ownership—this could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.

We’re hiring an experienced, AI-first software developer to maintain and improve multiple applications supporting our equine, agricultural, and veterinary businesses, including our Spade AI assistant.

THE OPPORTUNITY

You’ll work directly with the founder as our primary developer, with a clear connection between what you build and the people who use it.

We need someone who enjoys solving problems, moves quickly, and can take an idea from conversation through launch. You should be comfortable maintaining existing applications, improving what’s already working, and making sound technical decisions independently.

Personality matters here. You must be friendly, approachable, collaborative, and ready to tackle new challenges. You’ll work with people who know their businesses deeply and need a developer who listens, asks thoughtful questions, and enjoys finding solutions together.

Learning the equine and veterinary world can feel like learning a new language. There are specialized terms, complex workflows, and important details behind everyday decisions. You don’t need to arrive knowing everything, but you do need the curiosity, patience, and willingness to learn.

WHAT YOU’LL WORK ON

  • Maintain and improve multiple business applications.

  • Build features supporting ranch, equine, and veterinary operations.

  • Develop and improve Spade AI and other AI-powered features.

  • Connect applications with payment, accounting, and other business systems.

  • Troubleshoot issues across interfaces, backend services, databases, and integrations.

  • Own implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing support.

  • Work with the founder to prioritize improvements with the greatest practical impact.

  • Keep systems secure, reliable, and documented.

AI SKILLS WE NEED

AI should already be central to how you work. You should use tools such as Codex, Claude Code, or similar platforms to accelerate development—and have the experience to review, test, and stand behind the results.

You must also understand how to build and improve AI features inside an application. We’re looking for experience with:

  • Integrating large language models through APIs.

  • Designing effective prompts, instructions, and structured outputs.

  • Connecting AI to relevant business records, terminology, and knowledge.

  • Building feedback and memory systems that improve future responses.

  • Creating realistic evaluation examples and measuring accuracy.

  • Understanding model training and fine-tuning, including when they are appropriate.

  • Protecting sensitive information and keeping human review in workflows where mistakes have meaningful consequences.

You’ll help Spade better understand our terminology, workflows, and user preferences, and turn that understanding into useful, dependable assistance.

OUR TECHNOLOGY STACKS

  • Frontend: TypeScript, React, Next.js, and Tailwind CSS.

  • Solo Equine backend: Node.js, NestJS, PostgreSQL, and Prisma, with Redis and BullMQ.

  • Veterinary application: Next.js with Supabase/PostgreSQL and NextAuth.

  • Mobile: React Native and Expo.

  • Development and quality: GitHub, automated deployment workflows, Playwright, Vitest, Jest, and Sentry.

You should have strong full-stack experience and be comfortable learning your way around existing codebases.

INTEGRATION EXPERIENCE IS ESSENTIAL

A strong working understanding of Stripe and QuickBooks Online integrations is required, ideally with experience building and maintaining them in production.

  • Stripe: Card and ACH payments, refunds, webhooks, and accurate payment-status handling.

  • QuickBooks Online: OAuth connections, customer and invoice mapping, payments, credits, and accounting synchronization.

  • Reliable integrations: API limits, secure credentials, retries, duplicate prevention, error recovery, and resolving discrepancies between systems.

We value speed and sound judgment. These systems handle real money and business records, so accuracy matters.

WHO WILL THRIVE HERE

  • You’ve independently shipped and maintained production software.

  • You’re comfortable being the primary developer alongside a hands-on founder.

  • You’re friendly, dependable, and willing to work through unfamiliar challenges.

  • You have some familiarity with agriculture, ranching, livestock, or the equine industry.

  • You’re enthusiastic about learning the language and details of equine and veterinary operations.

  • You can turn a business conversation into a practical technical solution.

  • You communicate clearly, follow through, and take ownership.

  • You enjoy seeing firsthand how people use what you build.

  • A beautiful workplace: On-site work at a 400-acre ranch in Gainesville, Texas.

  • Hybrid flexibility: Full-time position with at least three days per week on-site and remote work available on the remaining days.

  • Meaningful ownership: Help shape applications that people rely on every day.

  • Compensation based on experience and demonstrated ability.

  • Benefits: 401(k), health insurance, paid vacation, and paid sick days.
