We are seeking an experienced Senior Platform Engineer to support the Air Force to help in developing and operating modernized applications that are used daily by the warfighter. This is an exciting new initiative where the Air Force is mirroring Silicon Valley processes and capabilities to quickly deploy new capabilities. Candidates must be passionate, energized, and excited to work on modern architectures and solve challenging problems for our clients.
Position Description (what you will do)
Own and evolve the foundational AWS GovCloud infrastructure (networking, IAM/account structure, VPC design, storage) underpinning the Data Operations platform, ensuring it scales securely and reliably as new data sources and workloads are onboarded.
Design, provision, and operate the platform's core managed data infrastructure — Amazon MSK (Kafka), AWS EMR (Spark), Aurora, S3, and Glue — sizing, scaling, and tuning these services to meet performance and cost requirements.
Own the Kubernetes platform itself (cluster architecture, node groups/autoscaling, upgrades, cluster networking, and cluster-level security posture) that the Data Engineering and DevSecOps teams build and deploy on top of.
Build and maintain the platform's Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform) modules and remote state management practices, providing a shared, reusable foundation other engineers provision against.
Establish and maintain platform reliability practices — monitoring, alerting, incident response/on-call rotation, capacity planning, and disaster recovery/backup procedures — for the underlying infrastructure.
Own cost visibility and optimization across the platform's AWS GovCloud footprint, right-sizing infrastructure and identifying savings opportunities.
Provide self-service, “golden path” tooling and documentation that allow Data Engineers and DevSecOps Engineers to provision and operate against the platform safely and consistently.
Own assigned infrastructure tasking independently — translate well-articulated requirements into working infrastructure — with oversight and guidance available from leadership as needed, and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
Requirements:
8+ years of professional infrastructure/platform engineering experience, including hands-on ownership of cloud infrastructure in production.
Strong experience with AWS infrastructure (networking, IAM, VPC design) and operating managed data services such as MSK (Kafka), EMR (Spark), Aurora, S3, and Glue at the infrastructure level.
Strong experience owning Kubernetes cluster architecture and operations (e.g., EKS), including node/cluster scaling, upgrades, and cluster-level networking and security.
Strong experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform), including module design and remote state management for a shared platform used by multiple teams.
Experience with platform reliability practices — monitoring/alerting, on-call incident response, capacity planning, and disaster recovery/backup procedures.
Proficiency with scripting/automation (Python, Bash) for infrastructure tooling.
Demonstrated ability to work independently against well-articulated tasking, with oversight and guidance available, and to mentor less experienced engineers.
Nice to Have:
Experience supporting DoD or Intelligence Community programs, particularly Platform One or other DoD software factory environments.
Experience with AWS GovCloud specifically.
FinOps/cost-optimization experience across a multi-service AWS environment.
Experience building self-service/golden-path platform tooling for other engineering teams.
Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect Professional, AWS DevOps Engineer Professional, CKA).
Prior experience mentoring or informally leading a small technical team.
Experience with, or familiarity with, Kubernetes deployment/orchestration automation tools such as Harpoon — the toolset this team is expected to use — for low-code, multi-cloud cluster provisioning and container deployment.
Our team is always hungry for more – more knowledge, more problem solving, more growth, more innovation, and, ultimately, customer success. This hunger and hustle fuel our determination to excel in everything we do. It’s not just about meeting established goals; it’s about exceeding them. We take immense pride in applying our expertise in cutting-edge technologies and our ability to adapt to emerging trends directly to the users in the field, as our nation’s protectors deserve nothing less.
