Job description

Silmaril

Security for agents that self-improves.

We are backed by Y Combinator and based in San Francisco.

The Opportunity

Silmaril is building a macOS app that must work reliably across different Mac hardware, macOS releases, and enterprise deployment environments.

You will own the compatibility work that makes that possible. You will build a test lab, define the right coverage, deploy through real MDM configurations, find failures before customers do, and give engineers the evidence they need to fix them.

This is a hands-on engineering role. You will move between Macs, MDM consoles, logs, automation, and product code to understand what happens in real environments.

AI Native Engineering

AI can help a great QA engineer explore more configurations and diagnose failures faster. We are looking for someone who uses it to increase the scope and rigor of their work.

You can use agents to generate test cases, build automation, compare results, and investigate logs. You know where direct testing on real devices and careful human judgment remain essential. Your goal is a repeatable system that gets stronger with every release.

You Will Own

Compatibility strategy

Define a risk-based test matrix across supported macOS versions, Apple silicon and Intel where applicable, device states, and MDM platforms.

MDM environments

Build and maintain working test environments in Jamf Pro and Microsoft Intune, with coverage of Kandji and Mosyle where appropriate. Test the policies and configuration differences customers will encounter.

Deployment workflows

Validate installation, enrollment, updates, removal, reinstalls, and macOS upgrades. Test both clean devices and machines with existing policies and software.

macOS behavior

Investigate permissions, privacy controls, profiles, background items, and system extensions where relevant. Distinguish product defects from packaging, signing, MDM configuration, and operating-system behavior.

Automation and tooling

Automate repeatable checks, device setup, evidence collection, and regression testing while preserving hands-on coverage for failures automation cannot reliably detect.

Reproduction and triage

Turn strange incompatibilities into precise bug reports with steps, configuration details, logs, impact, and a clear account of what changed.

Release quality

Set release criteria, report coverage and remaining risk, and work directly with engineering to verify fixes before they ship.

You

  • You have five or more years of experience in QA engineering, test engineering, or a closely related role.

  • You have tested native macOS software on real Macs across multiple OS versions and hardware configurations.

  • You have hands-on experience deploying and troubleshooting macOS software through at least one major MDM, such as Jamf Pro, Intune, Kandji, or Mosyle.

  • You can inspect logs, write scripts, build useful automation, and investigate a failure beyond the surface symptom.

  • You produce clear, reproducible bug reports and know how to prioritize a test matrix when exhaustive coverage is impossible.

  • You take ownership of the whole release experience, from a fresh MDM deployment to an update on a heavily configured customer machine.

  • Open to remote work

Bonus

  • Experience with endpoint security software, system extensions, PPPC/TCC, Full Disk Access, code signing, notarization, or macOS installer packages.

  • Experience administering several MDM platforms or supporting enterprise Mac fleets.

  • Strong Swift, Python, shell, XCTest, or CI experience.

  • A record of building a device lab or compatibility program from the ground up.
