Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Computation based in United States.

As a Senior Software Engineer on the System Design team, you will build the computation engines behind advanced solar and electrical design workflows.

You will work at the intersection of backend engineering, applied mathematics, simulation, and optimization.

Your work will directly influence the accuracy, reliability, and scalability of solar projects designed on the platform.

You will lead technical features from discovery through release while developing new approaches to complex computational problems.

The role involves close collaboration with product, design, research engineering, and QA teams.

You will also help shape scalable infrastructure, mentor teammates, and contribute to a strong engineering culture.

This is an opportunity to apply deep technical skills to software that supports the broader transition to renewable energy.

Accountabilities:

  • Design, build, and maintain backend systems and computation engines supporting solar and electrical design workflows.

  • Advance simulation and optimization capabilities for PV and battery storage system layout, component selection, and electrical configuration.

  • Develop reliable software that translates complex physical models, engineering constraints, and mathematical approaches into practical product capabilities.

  • Lead technical features through discovery, design, implementation, testing, and general release.

  • Propose and evaluate new mathematical approaches to challenging computational and engineering problems.

  • Shape the architecture of simulation and computation infrastructure to ensure it remains accurate, performant, scalable, and maintainable.

  • Design and develop APIs, microservices, and data pipelines that support computational workloads at scale.

  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code while establishing strong engineering patterns and practices.

  • Analyze computational systems for performance, correctness, scalability, and edge cases.

  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, research engineers, QA specialists, and other software engineers.

  • Participate actively in technical discussions, architecture decisions, code reviews, and design documentation.

  • Mentor teammates and contribute to raising the overall technical and engineering standards of the team.

  • Own services end to end, including reliability, operational support, and participation in the on-call rotation.

  • Contribute to continuous improvements across simulation, optimization, and system design capabilities.

  • Help translate complex technical concepts into solutions that can be trusted by users operating in real-world solar design environments.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong backend engineering foundation.

  • Academic background or equivalent expertise in computational mathematics, optimization, linear algebra, control theory, numerical algorithms, or a related technical discipline.

  • Hands-on experience developing simulation or optimization systems.

  • Experience designing and building APIs, microservices, or data pipelines at scale.

  • Strong algorithmic thinking and the ability to reason carefully about performance, correctness, scalability, and edge cases.

  • Proficiency in one or more backend programming languages; relevant experience with C++, Python, Ruby, or comparable languages is valuable.

  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles, testing practices, maintainable architecture, and production-quality development.

  • Ability to work effectively with complex mathematical, physical, or engineering models.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain sophisticated technical concepts clearly.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with distributed, cross-functional teams.

  • Experience taking technical initiatives from early discovery through production release.

  • Nice to have: Advanced degree such as an MS or PhD in computer science, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, physics, or a related field.

  • Nice to have: Familiarity with solar PV, battery technology, electrical engineering, or related physical systems.

  • Nice to have: Experience with cloud-native compute infrastructure and batch or distributed processing systems.

  • Nice to have: Genuine interest in renewable energy and technologies supporting the transition to solar.

  • Nice to have: Demonstrated ability to thrive in fast-moving environments where priorities and problem spaces evolve.

Benefits:

  • Flexible paid time off (PTO).

  • Parental leave.

  • Work-from-home stipend.

  • Coworking stipend.

  • Connectivity stipend.

  • Dedicated Energize Fridays.

  • Learning and development opportunities.

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.

  • Opportunities to work within a distributed, international environment.

  • Commitment to an inclusive and accessible workplace, with reasonable accommodations available throughout the hiring process.
