Senior Software Engineer (Backend) — Healthcare Messaging & Workflow Platform

Summary

• Senior backend engineer to build and scale a healthcare messaging + workflow platform

• Emphasis on AWS serverless, event-driven processing, reliability, observability, and clean architecture

• High ownership role in a small team; strong production mindset required

Core Technical Stack

• Language:

  TypeScript / Node.js

• AWS:

  Lambda, API Gateway, IAM, CloudWatch

• Workflows & Messaging:

  Step Functions, SQS, SNS, event-driven architectures

• Data:

  DynamoDB (primary); familiarity with relational databases a plus

• Infrastructure as Code:

  Terraform (preferred), CloudFormation; CDK familiarity helpful

• Testing:

  Jest (integration tests preferred)

• Architecture:

  Clean Architecture / SOLID patterns, dependency injection (e.g., Inversify-style patterns)

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and operate backend services in a serverless AWS environment

• Build and maintain APIs with strong contract discipline (validation, versioning, error modeling)

• Implement durable, observable workflow processing (idempotency, retries, backoff, DLQs, replay tools)

• Model and access data efficiently (DynamoDB key design, indexes, pagination, performance)

• Raise the quality bar through code reviews, automated tests, and pragmatic engineering standards

• Improve operational excellence (metrics, structured logging, tracing, alerting, runbooks)

• Collaborate cross-functionally to translate requirements into reliable technical designs

AI-Assisted Development (Required Experience)

We use modern AI-assisted development tools heavily to accelerate delivery while maintaining high quality and correctness. Candidates should have substantial, hands-on experience with:

Claude

(e.g., Claude Code or Claude for code generation/refactoring, planning, test generation, and iterative review cycles)

·      

OpenAI Codex

(e.g., CLI/workflows for implementation, debugging, test fixing, and structured plan execution)

What we expect you to be able to do:

·      Use Claude/Codex to iterate on implementation quickly without sacrificing code quality

·      Generate and refine tests (Jest preferred), improve reliability, and reduce regressions

·      Use AI tools responsibly: validate outputs, enforce standards, and avoid “prompt-to-prod” without review

·      Own assigned initiatives end to end, driving work independently and proactively addressing challenges. Communicate proactively and transparently, and take accountability for outcomes—both successes and setbacks—while delivering results aligned with team and company goals.

Required Qualifications

• 6+ years professional software engineering experience (backend-focused)

• Strong TypeScript/Node.js experience in production

• Strong AWS serverless experience (Lambda + API Gateway + IAM + CloudWatch)

• Heavy Claude and Codex Experience

• Experience with event-driven systems and workflow orchestration (Step Functions and/or queues)

• Proven reliability engineering instincts: idempotency, failure-mode thinking, safe deploys, incident response

• Strong API design skills and ability to maintain backward compatibility over time

Preferred Qualifications

• Healthcare or regulated-domain experience (interoperability, messaging, compliance) is a plus

• Experience with DynamoDB at scale (access patterns, GSI design, cost/performance tuning)

• Strong IaC experience with Terraform and multi-environment deployments

• Experience with CI/CD (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CodeBuild/CodePipeline)

• Familiarity with structured logging standards, distributed tracing, and metric-driven ops

Location / Work Model

• Candidate location must be in Central or Eastern United States

Compensation

• Salary $145,000 to $175,000
