Job description

Hume AI is looking for a product-minded frontend engineer to help build the interfaces through which developers, enterprises, and consumers interact with Hume’s voice AI platform. Join us in the heart of New York City and contribute to our endeavor to ensure that AI is guided by human values, the most pivotal challenge (and opportunity) of the 21st century.

ABOUT US

Hume AI is a Series B startup dedicated to building artificial intelligence that is directly optimized for human well-being. As the first company to release speech language models, we’re focused on expanding our research to encompass audio understanding models and evaluation platforms for enterprises.

Our goal is to enable a future in which technology draws on an understanding of human emotional expression to better serve human goals. As part of our mission, we also conduct groundbreaking scientific research, publish in leading scientific journals like Nature https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-022-01489-2, and support a non-profit, The Hume Initiative, that has released the first concrete ethical guidelines for empathic AI (www.thehumeinitiative.org http://www.thehumeinitiative.org). ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Frontend engineering team, you will help build the web applications and developer experiences through which customers interact with Hume’s AI products. You will work primarily in TypeScript, React, and Next.js, collaborating closely with backend engineers, product managers, designers, and research teams.

This is a product-oriented role focused on frontend architecture, performance, usability, and engineering quality. You will operate with a high degree of autonomy and own features from design and implementation through testing, rollout, and production support.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Design, build, and maintain production web applications using TypeScript, React, and Next.js.

  • Build intuitive interfaces for Hume’s voice AI products, developer platform, and enterprise tooling, thoughtfully surfacing real-time model behavior, system state, and other AI-specific interactions.

  • Develop reusable frontend components and shared engineering patterns.

  • Integrate frontend applications with APIs, WebSockets, and real-time services.

  • Build and maintain automated frontend tests.

  • Diagnose and improve frontend reliability, performance, and usability.

  • Collaborate closely with product and design to ship polished user experiences.

  • Write clear technical documentation for the systems and features you build.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Significant professional experience building production web applications.

  • Strong proficiency with TypeScript, React, and Next.js.

  • Strong understanding of modern JavaScript, HTML, CSS, browser rendering, caching, and frontend performance.

  • Strong product and UI intuition, particularly for AI-powered applications where interactions and information hierarchy may differ from traditional deterministic web applications.

  • Experience designing maintainable frontend architectures, including application state, data fetching, and data flows.

  • Experience building responsive, accessible, and polished user interfaces.

  • Experience with automated frontend testing, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.

  • A strong sense of ownership and the ability to make pragmatic engineering decisions independently.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • The ability to use AI-assisted coding tools effectively while retaining ownership of the resulting code, including being able to explain, validate, debug, and modify it independently when necessary.

BONUS POINTS

  • Experience building developer-facing products, dashboards, consoles, or API platforms.

  • Experience with WebSockets, WebRTC, streaming APIs, or other real-time applications.

  • Experience working with audio, video, visualization, or other rich interactive media.

  • Experience building component libraries or design systems.

  • Familiarity with modular frontend approaches.

  • Experience with frontend performance profiling, observability, or testing infrastructure.

  • Experience with Playwright or similar end-to-end testing frameworks.

  • Experience integrating authentication and authorization systems such as Auth0.

  • Familiarity with AI or machine-learning products.
