The Role
We are seeking a motivated, experienced Senior Software Engineer II for a full-time remote position (within the United States). This individual will serve as the technical lead and trusted technical advocate for our maintenance and long term clients, ensuring their digital platforms remain performant, secure, and strategically aligned with their goals.
The successful applicant will own the technical relationship with these clients, lead a team of engineers dedicated to retainers and maintenance work, and contribute to the strategic growth of our long-term engagements. The role will contribute to capacity, work collaboratively with management on organizational initiatives, and have opportunities to mentor direct reports. Applicants must have advanced knowledge of web development, content management systems, proven client-facing communication skills, demonstrated mentorship abilities, and an interest in social impact.
Reporting Structure
This position reports to the Director of Engineering. The role is primarily focused on billable project work with some management responsibilities for engineers within the working group.
What You’ll Be Doing
Core Responsibilities

Serve as the technical lead and primary technical advocate for clients within working group

Own the ongoing technical relationship with clients, providing strategic technical guidance, proactive maintenance, and rapid response during high-stakes periods (election cycles, campaign launches, advocacy pushes)

Develop and maintain websites utilizing modern WordPress and other CMS solutions

Develop front-end experiences and back-end solutions using modern best-practices in web technologies

Proactively identify technical issues, performance optimizations, security vulnerabilities, and strategic improvements for client projects

Integrate third-party tools, APIs, and CRMs

Implement content migration processes and techniques

Conduct cross-browser and cross-device testing

Troubleshoot and solve complex technical bugs/challenges under time-sensitive conditions

Lead client trainings, prepare documentation, and ensure knowledge transfer for client teams

Provide technical feedback and guidance throughout the project lifecycle, including design review, scope estimates, sprint planning, and code review
Team Leadership & Mentorship Responsibilities

Mentor and provide technical guidance to engineers within working group

Coordinate task assignments and priorities with project managers to ensure efficient delivery and client satisfaction

Conduct code reviews and support quality standards for the engineering team

Support onboarding and skill development for new team members and freelancers

Foster a collaborative team environment focused on continuous improvement and knowledge sharing

Serve as an escalation point for complex technical challenges, particularly within working group
Sales & Strategic Growth Responsibilities

Partner with the Director of Engineering and account leadership to retain and grow long-term clients

Contribute to proposals, scope estimates, and sales conversations

Identify opportunities for expanded engagements, addendums, and strategic technical initiatives with current clients

Provide technical expertise during discovery calls and client presentations

Collaborate with cross-functional teams (design, strategy, project management) to deliver integrated solutions that drive client success

Contribute to the development of service offerings, processes, and best practices
What You Bring
Experience / Qualifications
-
Minimum 5 years experience in web development
-
Minimum 2 years experience in a client-facing role within an agency setting
-
Demonstrated experience mentoring or leading other engineers
-
Advanced experience in web development using the following technologies: HTML5, SCSS (or equivalent preprocessor)/CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, PHP, Node.js, and React.js

Extensive experience with modern WordPress development, including custom block development and headless architectures
-
Strong knowledge of SysAdmins and DevOps: Web Servers, DNS, CDNs, Security Management, performance optimization
-
Experience utilizing and establishing AI-driven workflows
-
Proven track record in building, maintaining, and deploying applications using CI/CD pipelines (Webpack, Docker, Lando, GitHub Actions) and hosting platforms (WP Engine, Pantheon, or equivalent)

Extensive experience with responsive development and progressive enhancement

Strong working knowledge of Figma

Strong understanding of accessibility, modern web design principles, user experience, and information architecture

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

Proven ability to manage time, balance multiple client relationships, and prioritize under pressure

Experience supporting clients during high-stakes political campaigns or election cycles

Experience with CRMs and advocacy tools such as ActionKit, Action Network, Bonterra/EveryAction, Salesforce, etc.

Experience with PHP performance tracing and debugging

Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks/libraries (React, Next.js, Remix, etc.)

Familiarity with SSO/SAML and membership portals

Salary range: $105K - $130K plus benefits
