Senior/Staff Java Engineer — Electronic Trading Platform

A well-funded fintech is building the infrastructure that loans and CLO markets have never had. Trillions of dollars in these markets still move through phones, emails, and PDFs. This team is replacing that with real-time, AI-driven trading infrastructure — and they need serious backend engineers to build it.

The role

You'll be deep in the core of a proprietary electronic trading platform: high-throughput, low-latency systems handling real-time market data and trade execution. This isn't CRUD work — it's distributed systems, concurrency, and performance engineering applied to a market that's never had modern infrastructure. NYC-based (Manhattan), 4 days in-office, Friday remote.

What you'll actually build

Core trading engine components — order management, matching logic, real-time pricing
High-throughput, low-latency services processing live market data
Multithreaded, concurrent systems where correctness and performance both matter
Backend architecture as the platform transitions fully in-house
Data pipelines and APIs that product and quant teams build on top of

What we need

8+ years building production Java systems — this is a Java shop, not a "Java is fine" shop
Deep multithreading and concurrency chops — real experience with concurrent data structures, lock-free patterns, thread pool design, not just textbook knowledge
Strong CS fundamentals — data structures, algorithms, distributed systems
Relational databases and SQL at a level where you're optimizing queries, not just writing them
Experience building and scaling cloud-based backend systems
Bonus: experience in trading systems, market data infrastructure, or other latency-sensitive domains (fintech, ad-tech, gaming backend, HFT)
Bachelor's in CS, engineering, or related field

Comp
