Job description

Senior Software Engineer - Geospatial & Open Formats ๐ŸŒ

At Shakers, we are partnering with a global technology company in the geospatial analytics space to bring in a Senior Software Engineer who lives at the intersection of SQL engines, open data formats, and spatial analysis. Long-term, full-time, 100% remote.

The challenge

This is not a role about closing tickets. The company is redefining how spatial analytics runs on top of modern warehouses and lakehouses, and they need someone who can set the technical direction and then ship the code that proves it. You would shape how their spatial analytics framework evolves, how their SQL strategy holds up across engines, the bet on Iceberg and open formats, and how AI becomes a native execution surface, meaning agents consuming the analytical layer directly, not only humans through a UI. You would work alongside a core engineering team and the wider spatial analytics group, with no people management and the scope to become the technical reference across these fronts.

Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve the architecture of the spatial analytics framework

  • Own the cross-engine SQL strategy across BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks, Postgres, and Oracle

  • Drive the adoption of Iceberg and open table formats inside the analytical stack

  • Design how AI agents consume analytical functions programmatically

  • Write production code and give direct technical feedback in reviews

Requirements

  • SQL at engine level, meaning reading and tuning an execution plan, not just writing queries

  • Hands-on production experience with modern data warehouses and lakehouses: DuckDB, Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks, BigQuery

  • Proven experience building in the geospatial domain, not general data engineering applied to spatial problems

  • Working experience with the cloud-native geo ecosystem: GeoParquet, STAC, Arrow, Iceberg, point cloud formats, MobilityDB, GeoPandas

  • AI experience with substance: LLM-powered features shipped to production and hands-on work with agentic patterns

  • Still coding in production. This is not an architecture-only seat

  • Excellent English level. (C1/C2)

  • Based in Europe.

Why this project

  • Long-term project with real technical ownership over the product direction, not execution of someone else's roadmap

  • Direct exposure to engineering and company leadership from day one

  • 100% remote, with full schedule flexibility beyond the early start

  • A stack that sits at the front edge of the open geospatial ecosystem
