Senior Technical Business Analyst - Data
Blackbook.ai
Job description
Blackbook.ai is growing, and we're looking for a Senior Technical Business Analyst with a strong data focus to join our team in Toronto. You'll work directly on client engagements, embedded with client teams to deliver practical, data-driven solutions across Data, AI, Digital and Automation. Our clients span industries including Energy and Agriculture, so you'll get variety and real-world problems to solve.
This is a senior role that sits between the business and the data. You'll need excellent stakeholder management and communication skills. You'll work with business and technical users to understand what decisions they need to make and what information supports them, then turn that into clear requirements, data models and specifications that engineering teams can build from. You'll also use AI assistants to speed up the path from requirements to data designs, prototypes and high-level models.
Key Responsibilities
Data & Requirements Analysis
-
Elicit, document and manage complex business, data and reporting requirements across multiple stakeholder groups
-
Translate business questions into clear data requirements, including metrics, KPIs, business rules and definitions
-
Profile and analyse source data to understand its structure, quality, gaps and lineage
-
Develop and maintain data flow diagrams, source-to-target mappings, data dictionaries and conceptual or logical data models
-
Lead gap analysis and impact assessments for new data initiatives and system changes
Stakeholder Engagement
-
Act as a trusted advisor to senior business stakeholders, data owners and product owners
-
Facilitate discovery workshops, requirements sessions and sprint ceremonies
-
Get stakeholders to agree on common data definitions, and handle competing priorities with diplomacy and clarity
-
Explain data concepts clearly, and present findings and recommendations to executive audiences
Technical Collaboration
-
Partner closely with data engineers, architects, analysts and QA to validate data solutions
-
Review and contribute to the design of data pipelines, integrations, reporting layers and analytics products
-
Define integration requirements, transformation logic and data mappings
-
Support data quality, governance and master data efforts
Delivery & Governance
-
Own requirements traceability and make sure testing covers everything end to end
-
Lead UAT and data validation, including reconciliation, test scenarios and defect triage
-
Contribute to project planning, estimation and risk identification
-
Mentor junior BAs and set best practices for data analysis across the team
Required Qualifications
-
6+ years of experience as a Business Analyst on technical or data-focused projects, including at least 2 years in a senior or lead role
-
Strong SQL skills and confidence querying, profiling and validating data
-
Solid understanding of data modelling, data warehousing and ETL/ELT patterns
-
Experience producing artifacts such as BRDs, source-to-target mappings, data dictionaries, user stories and process flows
-
Strong understanding of the SDLC and Agile/Scrum
-
Experience with tools such as Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps or similar
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Nice to Have
-
Experience with modern cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP)
-
Exposure to BI and visualisation tools
-
Experience with data governance, data quality or metadata management
-
Familiarity with Python or other scripting for data analysis
-
Experience supporting AI/ML or advanced analytics use cases
What We're Looking For
You're curious about data and comfortable digging into it yourself, not just writing requirements about it. You're as comfortable debating transformation logic with an engineer as you are presenting a data roadmap to a VP. You ask the right questions, cut through ambiguity, and take ownership of outcomes, not just outputs.
Blackbook.ai offers a fast-paced, collaborative delivery environment with a strong emphasis on culture and teamwork. You'll work alongside a large team of experienced consultants, with on-the-job training, development and access to multiple certifications.
We offer a competitive remuneration package. If you'd like to grow with us and bring your energy and enthusiasm to Blackbook's solutions, please apply with your resume and cover letter.
