Software Developer – Java Backend

About the Role

Nexgrid is hiring a mid-to-senior Software Developer to architect and build next-generation backend systems for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and smart grid deployments. You'll work on large-scale, mission-critical Java applications that integrate AI/LLM capabilities, mobile platforms, and third-party systems—solving complex problems at the intersection of utility infrastructure and modern software innovation.

What You'll Do

• Design and architect distributed Java backend services handling millions of data points and complex business logic across utility networks

• Integrate cutting-edge AI and large language models into real-world infrastructure systems

• Build scalable REST APIs and integration layers that power mobile apps and third-party ecosystem connections

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to push the boundaries of what's possible in smart grid technology

• Optimize and scale relational database systems to handle massive throughput and complex queries

• Drive technical decisions on emerging technologies and architectural patterns

• Write clean, maintainable code and mentor through code review

• Contribute to architecture that shapes the future of utility software

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience

• Strong Java expertise (core language, OOP principles, enterprise patterns)

• Proven experience designing and optimizing relational databases at scale

• Experience building REST APIs or similar server-side interfaces

• Solid understanding of version control (Git) and CI/CD practices

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Mobile app development experience (iOS/Android, or mobile-accessible APIs)

• Experience integrating with AI/LLM services (OpenAI, Claude, or similar)

• Experience with distributed systems, microservices, or high-throughput architectures

• Familiarity with smart grid, IoT, or utility software domains

• SQL optimization and database performance tuning

Pay: $95,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
