Senior Software Engineer — Full-Time Startup Role

About Hay X

Hay X is building software that helps hay growers, buyers, brokers, and trucking companies manage their daily operations.

Our platform brings together inventory, weight tickets, dispatch, sales, contracts, invoicing, and communication.

We’re looking for an experienced software engineer who wants to commit full time to building and growing a startup. You’ll work directly with the founder and our development team to turn real customer problems into simple, reliable software.

The Role

This is a hands-on engineering position with significant responsibility. You’ll help improve the existing product, build new features, and make technical decisions that support growth.

We need someone who takes initiative, works hard, follows through, and cares about whether customers actually use what we build. You should be comfortable working through incomplete requirements, asking thoughtful questions, and carrying a feature from idea through launch.

What You’ll Do

• Build and maintain features across our web and mobile platform.

• Work directly with the founder to understand customer workflows and priorities.

• Simplify how customers manage inventory, weight tickets, loads, sales, and invoices.

• Improve reliability, performance, and the overall user experience.

• Develop APIs and integrations with external services.

• Investigate bugs, address root causes, and support customers when issues arise.

• Collaborate with the development team through code reviews and clear communication.

• Take ownership of features from planning through release and follow-up improvements.

• Balance speed with maintainable code, testing, and sound technical decisions.

What We’re Looking For

• Strong experience building and shipping production software.

• Full-stack development experience, including frontend applications, backend services, APIs, and databases.

• Experience working on a startup or a small team with substantial individual responsibility.

• Ability to turn complex business workflows into straightforward user experiences.

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.

• Clear communication, dependable follow-through, and attention to detail.

• Willingness to make Hay X your primary, full-time professional commitment.

• A practical approach to AI development tools, with responsibility for reviewing and validating the results.

Especially Valuable

• Experience as a founder or technical co-founder.

• Experience growing a product from early users to broader adoption.

• Experience with mobile applications, SaaS, marketplaces, or business management software.

• Familiarity with agriculture, trucking, logistics, inventory, or accounting workflows.

Agricultural experience is helpful but not required. Curiosity and a willingness to learn our customers’ businesses are essential.
