Software Engineer - File Integrations
Mindtris
Job description
Job Title: Senior Software Engineer File Integrations
Location: Pittsburgh, PA Hybrid
Employment Type: Full-Time Perm
Reports To: Manager, Software Engineering
Overview
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer with strong backend development and data integration experience to own and enhance critical flat file exchange capabilities.
This role is centered on designing, developing, maintaining, and supporting inbound and outbound flat-file integrations using C#, T-SQL, and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). The engineer will ensure data is reliably received from external partners, processed correctly within internal systems, and delivered accurately back to external partners.
This is not simply an SSIS maintenance position. We are looking for an experienced backend engineer who has built and supported file-processing solutions in production, understands the full software development lifecycle, and can bring greater structure, testing discipline, documentation, and reliability to the environment.
The right person will also be able to evaluate the existing integration approach and recommend practical modernization opportunities, including the potential use of Azure services and newer integration technologies where they provide meaningful improvements.
Responsibilities
File Integration Development
-
Design, build, enhance, and maintain SSIS packages used to ingest external flat files into internal systems.
-
Develop outbound file-generation processes that extract and transform internal data into files required by external partners.
-
Work with varying file formats, schemas, layouts, delivery schedules, and partner requirements.
-
Develop and optimize complex T-SQL, including stored procedures, queries, ETL transformations, data validation, and performance tuning.
-
Build and maintain C# applications and services supporting file processing, validation, transformation, orchestration, and related backend functionality.
-
Determine when functionality belongs within SSIS versus a C# application or service based on maintainability and technical requirements.
Reliability, Troubleshooting & Data Quality
-
Build validation and reconciliation processes that identify malformed, incomplete, inaccurate, or late files before they create downstream problems.
-
Monitor scheduled file-processing jobs and troubleshoot production failures.
-
Investigate recurring issues and drive root-cause resolution rather than relying on temporary fixes.
-
Implement effective logging and audit trails for inbound and outbound file activity.
-
Help ensure integrations are reliable, supportable, and easier to troubleshoot.
SDLC, Testing & Environment Ownership
A major expectation of this position is bringing strong software engineering discipline to the File Integrations function.
-
Follow the complete software development lifecycle, including requirements review, technical design, development, code review, testing, deployment, and post-production validation.
-
Ensure development, test, and staging environments are available and appropriately used before production deployment.
-
Build repeatable testing processes for inbound and outbound file integrations.
-
Develop representative test data and test scenarios covering normal processing as well as edge cases such as malformed files, partial deliveries, invalid data, and schema changes.
-
Document environment configurations, deployment processes, integration behavior, troubleshooting procedures, and testing practices.
-
Reduce dependency on undocumented knowledge by creating maintainable processes and technical documentation.
-
Promote predictable and repeatable software releases rather than making changes directly in production without appropriate testing.
Modernization & Continuous Improvement
The existing environment relies heavily on SSIS, T-SQL, and C#, and strong expertise in those technologies is essential. At the same time, we want someone who can help determine how the integration environment should evolve.
-
Evaluate existing file-processing solutions and identify opportunities to improve maintainability, reliability, automation, and scalability.
-
Recommend practical modernization approaches rather than replacing technology simply for the sake of modernization.
-
Explore opportunities to complement or evolve existing SSIS processes using Azure services or other modern integration and orchestration capabilities where appropriate.
-
Help establish development patterns and standards that will make the environment easier to support and expand over time.
Collaboration & Technical Leadership
-
Work closely with software engineering and other technical teams where file integrations intersect with application, messaging, workflow, or API-based integrations.
-
Communicate integration issues, processing status, risks, and partner-impacting changes clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
-
Work independently and take ownership of problems through resolution.
-
Mentor less experienced engineers in SSIS, T-SQL, backend development, file integration, testing, and troubleshooting practices.
-
Contribute to technical decisions and help establish standards as the integration function grows.
Required Qualifications
-
Minimum of 7 years of related software engineering experience.
-
Strong hands-on backend development experience with C#.
-
Strong hands-on experience designing, developing, and maintaining SSIS packages.
-
Advanced T-SQL experience, including complex queries, stored procedures, data transformations, validation logic, and performance tuning.
-
Demonstrated production experience building and supporting flat-file ingestion and/or outbound file-generation solutions.
-
Experience troubleshooting scheduled file-processing jobs and resolving production integration failures.
-
Strong understanding of data validation, error handling, reconciliation, logging, and auditability.
-
Strong understanding of the complete software development lifecycle.
-
Experience working with development, test, staging, and production environments.
-
Experience developing repeatable testing processes rather than relying solely on production validation.
-
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
-
Ability to independently own technical work while collaborating effectively with other engineering teams.
-
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience modernizing legacy or established integration environments.
-
Experience with Azure Data Factory or other Azure-based data integration and orchestration technologies.
-
Familiarity with SFTP-based file transfers, PGP encryption, and secure partner file-exchange practices.
-
Experience with Azure DevOps or similar CI/CD tooling.
-
Experience working within Agile development environments.
-
Experience in healthcare, specialty pharmacy, or another regulated environment involving sensitive data and strict external integration requirements.
-
Understanding of HIPAA and healthcare-related data requirements.
