Job description
IPG Defense, a stand-alone business of IPG Photonics, was incorporated in 2026 to provide direct support for defense products. Headquartered in Huntsville, AL, IPG Defense is bringing commercial scale to laser defense systems, leveraging IPG Photonics' 36 years of experience in fiber laser technology. Our mission: develop and deliver the most advanced, next-generation laser defense solutions for military and civilian use โ systems that accurately and reliably detect, track, target, and neutralize threats.
IPG Photonics is the world's leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance fiber lasers and amplifiers for diverse applications in numerous markets. Founded in 1990, IPG pioneered the development and commercialization of optical fiber-based lasers โ a critical technology in our high-energy laser (HEL) systems, including the CROSSBOW program.
Your skills and experience will play a key role in shaping our growing organization, building our capabilities, and delivering on our mission. Join us and build a career that will shape the future of laser defense.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Software Engineer develops device-interface and systems-integration software that connects IPG's directed-energy platforms to the outside world โ radars, sensors, cameras, and command-and-control (C2) systems. Working from Interface Control Documents (ICDs), this hands-on role builds reliable communication software in C#/Qt, prototypes quickly with embedded hardware, and supports integration in the lab and in the field. This opening targets a mid-level engineer; junior and senior candidates may also be considered, with level determined by experience and qualifications.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Implement software interfaces from ICDs in C# and C++/Qt, connecting external devices and subsystems to IPG platforms.
-
Develop and debug communication links over TCP/IP, UDP, RS-232/serial, and similar protocols.
-
Integrate external devices โ radars, sensors, cameras, and C2 systems โ and verify interface behavior against ICD requirements.
-
Build test harnesses, device simulators, and data-logging tools to validate interfaces before hardware is available.
-
Prototype rapidly using platforms such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi for fixtures, emulators, and proof-of-concept integrations.
-
Support lab integration and field testing; troubleshoot interface and timing issues across hardware and software boundaries.
-
Document interfaces, protocols, and integration procedures, and maintain configuration control.
Requirements:
-
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
-
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
-
3โ7 years of software development experience (junior and senior candidates considered at the appropriate level).
-
Proficiency in C# and/or C++ with Qt.
-
Experience with network and serial communications (TCP/IP, UDP, RS-232) between devices.
-
Experience implementing software interfaces from ICDs or similar interface specifications.
-
Hands-on experience with robotics or embedded platforms such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Active DoD security clearance.
-
Experience interfacing with radars, EO/IR or other sensors, or C2 systems.
-
Familiarity with defense messaging and bus standards (e.g., MIL-STD-1553, DDS, Link 16, or similar).
-
Experience with Python for tooling and test automation.
-
Experience with multithreaded and low-latency network programming.
-
Prior defense or aerospace program participation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
