Software Engineer

Are you an experienced web applications engineer? Do you want your day-to-day work to make a difference — moving research-based K-12 STEM education technology from idea to classroom? The Concord Consortium, an EdTech nonprofit R&D and product support organization dedicated to transforming STEM education through technology, is seeking a talented

Software Engineer

to create innovative science, engineering, and math simulations and applications and ship reliable, high-quality products. As a software engineer, you will build components for STEM education activities and create and improve systems for authoring, deploying, and reporting.

In this position you will:

• Write open-source code

• Work in sprints with a project leader and other developers

• Learn a project’s science, engineering, or math subject matter well enough to work effectively with the project leader

• Rotate among several projects, switching as needed

• Suggest new technology ideas to project leaders and developers

• Improve platform and deployment processes

• Optimize applications for maximum speed and scalability

• Participate in team discussions of software architecture and infrastructure

• Provide tools to help researchers access their project data, outputting data in different formats

• Build reusable code and libraries for future use

• Help the team in its ongoing quest to make the best use of AI coding agents

To accomplish this, you’ll need:

• 2+ years of experience with application-level JavaScript and preferably TypeScript

• Experience with mathematical modeling of physical systems

• Confidence and collaborative skills to work in an agile environment

• An undergraduate degree or equivalent in CS, mathematics, or natural sciences

• A software project completed with a team of developers

• Ability to work independently when necessary

• Good verbal and written communication skills

• Interest in creating superior educational software

You’ll be even more successful if you have experience with:

• JavaScript frameworks such as React and MobXStateTree

• AI coding agents such as Claude Code, and sensible practices around their use

• Cloud-based data storage such as Firebase

• Automated testing (Cypress, Playwrite or equivalent)

• GitHub Actions

• Science, math, data science, citizen science, or related field/applications

• Creating clean, usable, and beautiful user interfaces

• Designing well-structured applications that communicate through extensible APIs

• Cloud-based deployment, especially on Amazon Web Services

• Working on an agile team

• A background or personal interest in education, learning sciences, or working with researchers

• Working in a nonprofit, research, or mission-driven environment where impact matters as much as output

We offer four weeks of vacation, medical and dental insurance, a generous TIAA retirement plan, and life and short- and long-term disability insurance. This is a full-time, exempt position. The salary range for this position is $95,000 – $110,000 annually. The anticipated starting salary will be determined based on the candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and qualifications, as well as internal parity.
