Job description

The Sr. Data & Reporting Engineer is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and support of enterprise reporting, analytics, and data integration solutions. This role leads the development of Power BI dashboards, reports, semantic models, and reporting datasets that provide actionable insights and enable data-driven decision-making across the organization. The position is accountable for designing and maintaining robust SQL-based data warehouse solutions, database structures, and ETL processes to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and availability of enterprise data. Additionally, the Senior Data Engineer supports the organization's adoption and expansion of Microsoft Fabric by developing scalable cloud-based data engineering and analytics solutions. Working collaboratively with business stakeholders, analysts, and technical teams, this role translates business requirements into sustainable data solutions, drives process automation, and delivers high-quality reporting and analytics capabilities that support strategic and operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards by integrating data from multiple sources, ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and accessibility.

  • Performance Tuning & Diagnostics: Diagnose model and report bottlenecks using DAX Studio, Tabular Editor, and Power BI Performance Analyzer.

  • Compute & Automation: Author and optimize high-performance data transformation notebooks using PySpark, Spark SQL, and Delta Lake libraries

  • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise SQL Server database structures, schemas, and indexing strategies.

  • Write, debug, and optimize complex SQL queries, advanced stored procedures, user-defined functions, and views that process large volumes of operational data.

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize on-premises ETL processes built with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).

  • Manage secure hybrid data movement between on-premises SQL Server environments and Azure using Self-Hosted Integration Runtimes (SHIR).

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical solutions.

  • Assist business users with reporting questions, dashboard enhancements, and data interpretation.

  • OneLake Strategy & Architecture: Architect a unified OneLake strategy and implement OneLake Shortcuts to connect disparate data estates, including ADLS Gen2, AWS S3, and on-premises databases, without data duplication.

  • Medallion Data Framework: Build and manage data ingestion and processing frameworks using the Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers) to partition, clean, and enrich raw data.

  • End-to-End Fabric Implementation: Design, build, and maintain next-generation data solutions using Fabric Lakehouses, Warehouses, Pipelines, and Dataflows Gen2.

  • Capacity Management & Governance: Monitor and manage Fabric Capacity utilization and capacity unit (CU) consumption, optimizing queries and pipelines to prevent throttling and control operational cloud costs.

  • Advanced Semantic Layer Architecture: Architect robust, enterprise-grade semantic models using dimensional modeling and star schema techniques to maximize performance and cross-functional reporting flexibility.

  • Direct Lake Optimization: Leverage and optimize Direct Lake mode in Fabric to query Delta tables natively, reducing reliance on traditional Import refresh schedules and DirectQuery latency.

  • Complex Business Logic: Formulate, debug, and maintain advanced DAX calculations, complex time-intelligence measures, and calculation groups to surface analytical KPIs.

  • Tenant & Workspace Administration: Manage premium workspaces, access controls, gateway configurations, and deployment pipelines to support controlled content lifecycle management.

  • Analyze execution plans and query performance to eliminate bottlenecks and minimize deadlocks.

  • Design, build, and monitor cloud-based ingestion and orchestration workflows using Azure Data Factory (ADF).

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

  • 3-5 years of data engineering experience, with substantial focus on the Microsoft and Azure data ecosystems.

  • Advanced Power BI expertise in star schema modeling, complex DAX, calculation groups, workspace administration, deployment pipelines, and performance tooling, including Tabular Editor and DAX Studio

  • Deep, hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server development, database design, and administration concepts.

  • Mastery of T-SQL, with demonstrated experience writing and tuning highly complex queries using advanced CTEs, window functions, and dynamic SQL.

  • Experience troubleshooting and optimizing data pipelines, SQL databases, semantic models, and reporting solutions.

  • Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate (DP-700) preferred

  • Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300)

  • Ability to engage periodically with stakeholders at the Louisville pharmacy location.

  • Comprehensive proficiency in both legacy SSIS development and modern cloud orchestration using Azure Data Factory.

  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric workspaces, capacity management, OneLake Shortcuts, Lakehouse architectures, Pipelines, Dataflows Gen2, and Spark notebooks.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, collaboration, and communication skills.

  • Healthcare or pharmacy domain knowledge.

  • Familiarity with HIPAA requirements as they relate to data storage, access, and sharing.

  • Experience supporting regulated data environments, data governance, security, and reporting standards.

Physical Demands

  • The physical demands of this position are in keeping with general office functions: sitting, using a computer, keyboard, telephone, etc.

  • Reasonable accommodation can be made to enable employee to perform the essential job duties.
