- About the Opportunity:
The Staff Software Engineer, Affirm Bank role serves as a senior individual contributor on a small, AI-native engineering team responsible for the organization''s bank systems. This position sets the technical direction for core banking infrastructure and integration with the broader company, owning complex, high-impact problems, and shaping the bank’s technical architecture and standards. The role directly influences how the bank operates under its charter and integrates with broader organizational systems.
- Responsibilities:
• Define and lead the technical strategy for the bank’s core systems including cloud infrastructure, data platforms, and integration boundaries.
• Design, build, integrate, and operate the most complex and ambiguous components of the banking stack.
• Establish and uphold high standards for code quality, design review, and documentation within a small engineering team.
• Utilize AI tools to enhance engineering productivity and operational workflows.
• Manage vendor evaluation, integration, and ongoing relationships across critical banking platforms.
• Define and maintain the integration patterns between the bank and parent organization.
• Collaborate with compliance, legal, risk, and audit teams to ensure systems meet regulatory requirements.
• Develop operational practices that maintain system reliability, observability, and audit readiness.
• Communicate technical strategies and trade-offs to leadership and cross-functional teams.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to team growth and hiring processes.
- Requirements:
• Minimum of 8 years of software engineering experience with demonstrated ability to own complex, high-stakes systems through launch and operation.
• Proven ability to manage ambiguity and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools to improve code quality and team productivity.
• Preference for simplicity, lean engineering practices, and standalone-operability.
• Experience setting technical direction and executing multi-quarter strategies beyond individual projects.
• In-depth knowledge of public cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS), infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform, and cloud data platforms such as Snowflake.
