Job Purpose

We are looking for an experienced Structural Design Engineer who can independently perform structural analysis, design calculations, connection design, foundation design, and preparation of professional structural calculation reports for various steel structures, car parking shades, canopies, wall-mounted supports, warehouses, and miscellaneous metal works.

The candidate must have strong practical knowledge of structural engineering, wind-load analysis, steel design, connection detailing, foundation stability, and relevant international standards. The engineer should be capable of handling projects from initial design and calculations through consultant approval and technical coordination.

Key Responsibilities1. Car Parking Shade Design โ€“ All Types

Independently analyse and design all types of car parking shades

, including but not limited to:

  • Cantilever car parking shades, including single-sided and double-sided cantilever systems.

  • Conventional two-post and multi-post parking shades.

  • Single-column, umbrella-type and central-post parking shades.

  • Double-arm and extended-arm parking shade systems.

  • Curved, arched and arch-supported parking shades.

  • Pyramid, hip-roof and conical parking shades.

  • Butterfly and inverted-V parking shades.

  • Barrel-vault and curved-roof parking shades.

  • Mono-slope, gable-roof and pitched-roof parking shades.

  • Tensile membrane and fabric parking shades.

  • HDPE, PVC/PVDF and PTFE membrane shade structures, as applicable.

  • Individual parking bays, multi-bay arrangements and large car park shade systems.

  • Special architectural, custom-designed and irregular parking shade structures.

  • Solar-ready car parking structures and solar carports, where required.

The engineer must be capable of designing columns, cantilever arms, arches, rafters, beams, purlins, bracing, support pipes, fabric-support systems, base plates, anchor bolts and foundations for these structures.

The engineer should also understand fabric tensioning arrangements, membrane geometry, wind uplift, load transfer, structural stability and the effect of different shade configurations on member forces and foundation reactions.

  1. Roof Canopies, Entrance Canopies and Wall-Mounted Structures
  • Design roof canopies, entrance canopies, building entrance shades and walkway canopies.

  • Design wall-mounted and cantilevered canopies, brackets, support arms and structural frames.

  • Calculate loads and connection forces transferred to existing walls, columns and supporting structures.

  • Check anchor bolts, chemical anchors, base plates, stiffeners, welded connections and supporting concrete or steel elements.

  • Assess eccentric loading, cantilever moments, deflection, vibration and local failure risks.

  • Verify whether the existing supporting structure can safely accommodate the proposed loads.

  1. Steel Structures and Warehouses
  • Design structural steel frames, warehouses, industrial sheds and portal-frame structures.

  • Design columns, beams, rafters, trusses, purlins, girts, bracing and roof-support systems.

  • Design steel platforms, access structures, maintenance walkways and equipment supports.

  • Check member capacity, buckling, lateral stability, torsion, deflection and overall structural stability.

  • Review fabrication and erection drawings to ensure consistency with the approved structural design.

  1. Miscellaneous Metal Works

Perform structural calculations and verify designs for:

  • Steel stairs, ladders, handrails and guardrails.

  • Gratings, chequered plates and access platforms.

  • Gates, fences, barriers and security structures.

  • Steel doors, frames, supports and miscellaneous fabricated steel items.

  • Equipment supports, wall brackets, pipe supports and custom metal assemblies.

  • Aluminium structures and other structural metal systems, where applicable.

  1. Structural Analysis and Design Calculations
  • Calculate dead loads, imposed loads, wind loads, wind uplift and other applicable environmental loads.

  • Determine member forces, support reactions, bending moments, shear forces, axial forces and torsion.

  • Perform structural analysis for cantilever systems, curved members, frames, trusses and braced structures.

  • Check steel members for strength, stability, buckling, slenderness and serviceability.

  • Verify deflection limits and overall structural integrity.

  • Assess load paths from the roof or membrane through the steel frame, connections, anchor bolts and foundations.

  • Independently verify critical software results using manual calculations and engineering checks.

  1. Connection and Anchor Bolt Design
  • Design bolted and welded steel connections.

  • Calculate beam-to-column, column-to-base-plate, cantilever-arm, brace and member-end connections.

  • Design base plates, stiffeners, gusset plates, end plates, cleats and connection brackets.

  • Calculate anchor bolt tension, shear, pull-out and other applicable failure modes.

  • Check concrete breakout, pry-out, edge-distance effects, embedment depth and combined tension and shear, as applicable.

  • Provide practical, safe and economical connection solutions suitable for fabrication and site installation.

  1. Foundation Design
  • Design isolated footings, column pedestals, combined footings, strap footings and tie beams.

  • Assess foundations subjected to overturning, sliding, uplift, eccentric loading and lateral forces.

  • Check soil bearing pressure, resultant location, settlement considerations and foundation stability.

  • Design footing dimensions, depth, reinforcement and pedestal details.

  • Verify concrete bending, one-way shear, punching shear and anchor-bolt load transfer, as applicable.

  • Coordinate foundation design with available geotechnical information and site constraints, including restricted excavation areas and nearby structures or swimming pools.

  1. Software, Reports and Documentation
  • Use structural analysis software such as STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, ETABS or Autodesk Robot, as appropriate.

  • Prepare calculation spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel and perform independent engineering checks.

  • Prepare clear, complete and professionally formatted structural calculation reports.

  • Produce or review structural drawings and coordinate with the drafting team using AutoCAD and other relevant software.

  • Prepare design assumptions, loading criteria, material specifications, design checks, support reactions, connection calculations and foundation calculations.
